New tourism program aims at 'green' travelers

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Virginia is for lovers, and for greens — as in lovers of the environment, that is.

That's what state officials are hoping, at least.

State officials say studies find that travelers would pay more to go to a green destination. To bring in more tourist dollars, the state is kicking off a new initiative today of Virginia Green, a statewide program that works to reduce the environmental impacts of Virginia's tourism industry while raising environmental awareness.

The Virginia Green program, started in 2006, enables businesses, hotels and restaurants to certify that they are using green techniques. Nearly 150 have done so. The new initiative broadens it to include attractions such as museums.

Virginia Tourism Corp. is teaming with the state Department of Environmental Quality to conduct the program. State officials plan to announce details at 10 a.m. today at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach.
