Taylor Brothers Lumber closing

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Taylor Brothers Lumber Company, a Lynchburg building supply company, will close its doors after nearly 60 years in operation, a company official said Thursday.

Robert Taylor Jr., the former president of Taylor Brothers who worked as director of the Lynchburg company, said the store was closing because of financial problems with its parent company, Roper Brothers Lumber Company of Petersburg.

“We are a division of Roper Lumber, and they’re the ones that are bankrupting,” he said. “The Taylor family is not affiliated with it whatsoever.”

Taylor Brothers operated a location at 905 Graves Mill Road near U.S. 501. Another location in Bedford opened in 1999 but has since closed. In December 2005, The Home Depot opened directly across the street from Taylor Brothers on Graves Mill Road.

Founded in Lynchburg in 1952, the company was sold to Roper Brothers Lumber Company in 2006.

Taylor said his concern is for the employees who won’t have a place to work.

“We’re just trying to look after the employees that are there, and see what we can find for them,” he said.
