The Lynchburg area’s jobless rate fell in April after rising for six months, mirroring a similar decrease statewide.
According to the Virginia Employment Commission, the area’s unemployment rate in April was 7.2 percent with 9,110 people unemployed, compared to 7.5 percent and 9,550 unemployed in March.
The jobless rate still is more than twice was it was in April 2008, however, when it stood at 3.3 percent.
The statewide unemployment rate had a similar decrease, from 6.9 percent in March to 6.6 percent in April.
Some of the improvement resulted from seasonal hires in the leisure and hospitality sectors, although there was continued growth in health care and computer system design industries, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.
