Verizon has upgraded equipment that could bring faster Internet speeds within reach of thousands of homes in the Lynchburg area, the company announced Monday.
The upgrades were performed in areas such as Timberlake Road and Church Street in Lynchburg; in Concord, Madison Heights and on New London Road, Verizon spokesman Harry Mitchell said in an e-mail.
In Nelson County, the upgrades happened in Lovingston, Nellysford and Wintergreen. In all, 6,400 homes in the Lynchburg area could have access to faster Verizon digital subscriber line service, Mitchell said.
The upgrades could let Verizon DSL customers download information at 10 to 15 megabits per second, more than twice the maximum speed they could get before, a news release said.
Verizon DSL subscribers choose the speed tier they wish to pay for. Residential customers can get the new, faster service for $49.99 per month if they also are a Verizon home phone customer, or $59.99 without a home phone.
