Employees of Thomasville Furniture in Appomattox should learn soon whether they will go back to work or lose their jobs.
Thomasville Furniture’s parent company, Furniture Brands International, started a 90-day furlough for some employees in Appomattox in December. After 90 days, employees could return to work or could be laid off, depending on the status of the ready-to-assemble furniture market.
“No employees have been notified of their status as of yet,” John Hastings, vice president of communications for Furniture Brands International, said Tuesday. “We would expect affected employees to be notified within the next two weeks.”
The company does not release information about the number of employees it has at specific locations, or how many are affected by furloughs or layoffs. The December furloughs affected “a significant number of the total workforce,” Hastings said at the time.
The company put the workers on unpaid leave for 90 days because the Appomattox facility makes only ready-to-assemble furniture, and the market for those products was slow, according to Hastings.
The fate of the jobs depended on whether the market for that furniture increased during the furlough. Hastings said Monday that he is not sure whether that market has improved.
Furniture Brands International is headquartered in Missouri.
