A team of business and government leaders on Wednesday held its second meeting to make a regional plan for economic development.
The plan is called a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy. The Region 2000 Local Government Council is coordinating the planning process with a 52-person team.
The final plan, due next August, could help local government bodies in the Lynchburg region access more federal grants for economic development projects.
In Wednesday’s meeting, the team conducted a “SWOT Analysis,” which identifies strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the region’s economy.
That analysis “will help us when it comes time to build our goals and objectives,” said Gary Christie, executive director of the Local Government Council. “Using the strengths and the opportunities we have, as well as knowing what our weaknesses and threats are, we can better determine what goals and objectives to set.”
The team members identified weaknesses such as the need for more natural gas infrastructure in the region, and opportunities such as making Lynchburg an important part in the revival of nuclear power development.
At 5 p.m. Oct. 13, the team will hold a public information session at the Lynchburg Public Library to update the public on the plan.
In November, the team will set goals and objectives for economic development in the area. In February, they will discuss projects that would help reach those goals, Christie said.
