Verizon Wireless plans to seek several special use permits from Bedford County that would allow new cell towers and co-locations at existing towers to improve its network.
Verizon representatives met with the county’s planning commission Tuesday to discuss technology upgrades related to the plan.
The commission’s role is to examine land use matters —including permits — and make recommendations to the county board of supervisors.
Since a recent merger with Alltel, Verizon has identified “inadequate” coverage areas in the county where new wireless facilities are required, said Lori H. Schweller, an attorney for the company, in a letter to the commission. Trees that have grown around existing towers block signals, she said.
There are about six sites planned for new cell towers or co-locations to existing ones that would be filed in two forthcoming applications, she told commissioners. Part of the request would include seeking height extensions of monopoles, she said.
Cell towers require a special use permit in zoning districts where they are permitted in Bedford regardless of height, according to county officials.
