FOREST — Intercon, Inc. is a veteran-owned company that’s proud to be a manufacturer in this country.
The company celebrated its 25th anniversary Thursday by inviting elected officials and local business leaders for a tour of the facility and an employee celebration.
Intercon, which has 57 full-time employees at its 42,000-square-foot facility on Corporate Park Drive in Forest, makes custom cable assemblies and manufactures wire harnesses. A large banner in its manufacturing area reads “Made in the USA.”
“It’s our goal to continue to build American-made products,” said Joe Stephens, vice president and general manager.
Intercon has experienced a 25-percent sales increase since last year.
At the closing of the event, Army National Guard Sgt. Michael Hughes presented Stephens and customer service manager Alison Richardson with a letter of appreciation from the National Guard and a cased American flag, because Intercon supported Hughes and his family when he recently donated a kidney to another soldier.
State Sen. Steve Newman, R-Lynchburg, spoke to the employees and said he is trying to give Virginia businesses the regulatory environment to allow them to grow.
“This governor is focused on jobs unlike anything I’ve ever seen before,” he said.
Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-6th District, said America is still the leading manufacturer in the world, but it would lose that status unless government wasn’t friendly with the competitive nature with business.
“We need to keep that manufacturing here,” he said. “We need to grow more jobs here.”
