Michael Weston, the MacGyver-esque former spy at the center of USA’s “Burn Notice,” is back tonight with a whole new bag of tricks.
I just can’t say enough great things about this series, which was one of last summer’s best.
And as Michael and company return for a second season tonight at 10 p.m., the show is as good as ever.
In case you didn’t heed my many recommendations to watch the show last year, here’s the deal: Michael (played by the beyond-hot Jeffrey Donovan) is a former spy searching for answers as to why he was black-listed, what those in-the-know call being “burned.”
At the beginning of last season, Michael received notice of his burned status and woke up in Miami after a particularly brutal final mission.
While looking for answers, Michael also began working as a private investigator of sorts, helping, in his own very unique way, everyday people who found themselves in peril.
Backup often came in the form of ex-girlfriend and former IRA operative Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar, with whom Donovan has crazy chemistry) and loyal, ex-CIA buddy, Sam (cult hero Bruce Campbell).
Both are back for season two, as is Michael’s nagging mother (Sharon Gless), who can always be counted on to give our favorite spurned spy some grief.
The action picks up right where it left off, with Michael pulling into the back of a cargo truck after that cryptic female caller — the person responsible for his burn notice — told him it was time to bring him in.
The caller eventually gives him a new assignment: to help a geeky computer technician steal some heavily guarded information from a private security firm.
Donovan continues to shine as one of television’s best leading men, especially when he’s doling out his espionage tips and tactics in deadpan voiceovers. And give a raise to whoever cast Campbell as his wisecracking sidekick; that guy never fails to crack me up.
If it were up to me, Michael would never get to the bottom of his burn notice. It’s just way too much fun watching him operate on the outside, looking in.
