CBS is bringing back the game show "Let's Make a Deal" on Oct 5. It will replace the canceled "Guiding Light," which is ending on Sept. 18 after a 50-year run.
Entertainer Wayne Brady will be the host. The format will be similar to the original, hosted by Monty Hall, 87, who will be a producer and consultant on the new show.
Remember Monty: "I'll give you $50 if you have a hard-boiled egg in your purse?"
Remember the lovely model Carol Merrill?
The original debuted in 1963 when the show's Big Deal of the Day was worth about $15,000.
Audience members, trying to get Hall's attention, started coming to the studio in costumes, dressing up like turnips or giant bunny rabbits.
CBS decided to drop "Guiding Light" because of declining ratings and production costs. A game show costs less to produce than a soap opera.
"Let's Make a Deal" ran for 13 years, first on NBC and then on ABC. It has been revived several times in daytime and evening editions. The last was in 2003 on NBC with Billy Bush of "Access Hollywood." It was short-lived.
FREAKY HIT: The Syfy network (formerly Sci-Fi) reports that its new offbeat thriller "Warehouse 13" is a summer hit, averaging more than 4 million viewers each week.
The series debuted on July 7 and airs at 9 p.m. Tuesdays.
The title refers to a dusty old warehouse that houses all manner of supernatural and paranormal artifacts (sort of like the place they stored the ark in "Raiders of the Lost Ark").
Character actor Saul Rubinek co-stars as Artie, the eccentric keeper of the strange junk. Under his wing are two agents: wisecracking Pete (Eddie McClintock) and the smart, attractive Myka (Joanne Kelly).
