Couch Potato: The CW's 'Melrose Place' reboot fails to impress

Original cast members Laura Leighton and Thomas Calabro appear as Sydney and Michael in the remake.

We all saw this one coming right?

Once The CW’s “90210” reboot did well last year, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to know that “Melrose Place” couldn’t be far behind.

The new series, which premieres at 9 p.m. Sept. 8, right after “90210,” even boasts a few familiar faces in original cast members Laura Leighton and Thomas Calabro, who return as Sydney and Michael.

Syd, who apparently faked her death 11 years ago, is alive, well and the legendary apartment complex’s latest landlord.

At one point, she tells a tenant she returned searching for a makeshift family similar to the one she had with Melrose Place’s former residents.

The complex’s new tight-knit group includes Michael’s son and Syd’s one-time lover, David (Shawn Sipos); high-powered publicist Ella (Katie Cassidy, “Harper’s Island); sous chef Auggie (Colin Egglesfield, “All My Children”), med student Lauren (Stephanie Jacobsen), aspiring filmmaker Jonah (Michael Rady, “Greek”) and his long-time girlfriend Riley (Jessica Lucas, “90210”), a first grade teacher; and Violet (Ashlee Simpson-Wentz), Melrose’s newest tenant.

I was never a huge fan of the show, but watched it enough to know that the update echoes the original’s melodramatic tone.

It even has some of the same character types.

Ella is totally the second coming of Heather Locklear’s witchy Amanda, and live-in loves Jonah and Riley reminded me of the wholesome Billy (Andrew Shue) and Allison (Court-ney Thorne-Smith).

And, much like the original, I’m feeling pretty indifferent about the show itself and its cast.

Watch if you want, but my advice is to skip it — and look for something a little more original.
