From staff reports
This year’s Amherst Historical House Tour offers a glimpse into some fine area homes and more.
To be sure, there are houses on the tour, set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19. They include:
--The Borel House, built in 2005, reflects the influence of early 20th century Colonial Revival houses;
--The Wilkins House, built in 2006 in the French country style, was featured in Mountain Homes magazine;
-- Briar Hill, was built in 1933-1934 in the Minimal Traditional style influenced by the Great Depression.
The tour also offers a visit to a bed and breakfast, the main house for the Poplar Grove golf community and the building that houses one of the county’s oldest congregations. These buildings are:
-- Dulwich Manor, an English-style manor house secluded in a grove of oaks, now used as a bed and breakfast;
-- Poplar Grove, a brick Georgian structure built around 1800, which is now the center of a golf community;
-- Ebenezer Baptist Church, which organized as a congregation in 1771 and first met in a log cabin, and now is housed in a structure with its oldest part built shortly after the Civil War.
Tour tickets may be purchased at any of the houses visited. Tickets for the full tour are $15 each; tickets for individual houses are $3 each.
Box lunches will be available at Poplar Grove between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for $8. For reservations, call the Amherst Museum and Historical Society at (434) 946-9068.
