The Jefferson Choral Society is opening its 19th season with two performances this weekend.

“Peace on Earth,” a Christmas concert, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 and 4 p.m. Dec. 7 at Heritage United Methodist Church in Lynchburg.

The chorus will sing a variety of Yuletide favorites, including “Silent Night,” “Ding Dong Merrily on High” and “The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy.”

A highlight of the program will be Italian composer Giovanni Gabrieli’s “Magnificat,” which was composed for three separate choirs and has a total of 12 voice parts.

Jefferson Choral Society (JCS) Music Director Aaron Garber says Gabrieli was one of the most influential composers of his day.

The concert will also feature organ accompanist Rose Peak, the Jefferson Youth Chorale and Cantate, the Children’s and Youth Choir of Central Virginia.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students. Children 12 and younger, who are with an accompanying adult, get in free. Tickets can be purchased from any JCS member, online at lynchburgtickets.com, or at Givens Books, Arthur’s Jewelry in Bedford and Wyndhurst, Aylor’s Farm & Garden, What a Blessing Bakery in Amherst and Miller’s Jewelry in Altavista.

Season tickets are also available online and provide preferred seating at concerts. They cost $50 for individuals and $100 for families.
