Five area youth choirs and musical groups will perform Nov. 9 at Eighth Street Baptist Church, and the proceeds will go to other children in need at Christmas.
The event, scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and called “Each One Reach One,” will include the voices and music of Youth for Truth Street Ministries — organizers of the event — as well as that of:
-- Eighth Street Baptist Church’s youth choir, the Jewels of Eighth Street
-- Tree of Life Filling Station Praise Team
-- Anointed Steps
-- Ordained
It’s not just kids helping out other kids, and it’s not just music, though. The event also includes dance and mime, as well as performances by groups whose members include young adults, as well as youth. They are:
-- The Power of God Perpetual Praise Dance Team
-- Power of God Mime Team
-- Appomattox Presbyterian Church Bell Choir
-- Unity
-- Forgiven
And then there are groups with members of all ages, such as Tim Drunkard’s group from Tree of Life.
Youth for Truth is a 10-year-old nonprofit ministry based on the concept of kids from different churches coming together to reach other kids in ministry.
Founded by Kenneth Braxton, it started with Rose Chapel Baptist Church, ScottZion Baptist Church and Prayer of Faith Temple, COGIC. Now directed by Gordon Harris, it has grown and now includes Living Word Ministries, Tree of Life, RAMP, Christ Temple Holiness Church, Abundant Life Ministries, Power of God Church, Peaceful Baptist Church, Piney Hill Baptist Church and New Birth International Christian Ministries.
Youth for Truth perform in concert, and they host street revivals and fundraising activities to support their ministry. They’ve played at the annual Day in the Park, the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge and Meals on Wheels’ annual fundraiser, according to their Web site, www.youthfortruthministry.org.
They’ve made two CDs, and a third is in the works. There are also ministries in drama and dance.
The ministry’s goals are to teach leadership skills and fundamental values.
An offering will be requested. All proceeds will be donated to the Lynchburg Social Services Foster Care for use for the children’s Christmas program.
Through the program, a number of community organizations, companies and churches try to make every child in need has a gift or gifts during the holidays. Children create their wish lists, and their sponsors try to make the wishes come true.
