Soul food: Organizations pair to offer low-cost food

A new Virginia nonprofit is helping Hill City residents get the food they need.

Feed the City is playing host to Angel Food Ministries, a national organization that provides groceries to people in need. Organizers will distribute the food from the Kemper Street Market every month. The first distribution date is Sept. 27.

“The food prices have gone up so much this year, and gas prices have gone up,” says David Mills, president of Northern Virginia-based Angel Food Ministries and a Liberty University graduate. “People are really struggling with these issues.”

Mills says Angel Food is designed to help someone who might make too much money to qualify for food stamps or other food assistance programs.

“That’s really one of the places where Angel Food excels,” he says, adding that the program can cut people’s grocery bills in half.

The food comes in boxed units for $30 each, and it’s up to the customer to pick what goes in his or her unit from a menu of fresh and frozen items that changes every month.

All of the food is grocery-store quality, meaning nothing is second-hand, damaged or out-of-date. Angel Food buys from distributors who offer discounts for buying in bulk.

One unit includes about 10 pounds of meat and 15 to 18 other items, and can usually feed a family of four for about a week, according to the organization’s Web site.

For example, some of September’s menu options are sirloin steak, pizza, boneless chicken breasts, macaroni and cheese, stir-fry vegetables, bratwurst, eggs, shelf-stable milk and one dessert item.

Angel Food also provides full frozen meals specifically designed for senior citizens’ dietary needs. Each Senior Box, which costs $25, contains 10 different meals.

“People are getting a ton of benefits for participating,” Mills says.

There is no limit on how many units a person can buy, and there are no requirements to participate. Angel Food also accepts Food Stamps.

“We don’t think of hunger as being a real issue in America,” Mills says. “But the truth is, (it is).”

Feed the City is currently accepting orders for next month, and the deadline to apply is Sept. 8. For information or to apply, stop by the market or visit www.angelfoodministries.com.
