ROANOKE -- A theater that was once the heart of Roanoke's arts community is closing.
Mill Mountain Theatre's board members announced yesterday that they have canceled at least the rest of this season because of large debts. Its last play, "Driving Miss Daisy," opens tonight and will run through Feb. 8 if the theater can meet production costs.
Board member Jason Bingham says the 40-year-old theater "most likely" will declare bankruptcy. He says theater officials are hopeful that the theater will reopen in the future, but there's no target date.
Board members confirmed close to $600,000 in debts in 2006, and Bingham says they haven't gone down.
