The James River Council for the Arts & Humanities is hosting its first official event since being established in December.
CULTUREbuzz, a monthly arts and culture social gathering, is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at Starlight Café on Fifth Street.
“We’ve done a lot of planning and a lot of thinking about what we want the arts council to be,” says Anna Bentson, chairwoman of the council’s marketing committee. “It’s fun to finally be getting out there to spread the word.”
The council was formed to act as an advocate for local arts organizations through support, development and publicity.
Bentson says they envision CULTUREbuzz as one component of that; it will be a way for local artists to share ideas and to network professionally and socially. Food, beer, wine and coffee will be available for purchase.
The gatherings will continue on the third Thursday of every month, and Bentson says they will change venues each time. Next month’s event is set for Oct. 15 at the Holiday Inn Select’s new restaurant, Lunchbag on Main.
“It’s open to anybody interested in learning more about the arts council or anyone interested in the arts … to come out and enjoy each other.”
