The Junior Miss scholarship program is all about bringing out the best in each participant, says former competitior Meghan Hurt.
“These girls have been working on this program since June,” says Hurt, now director of the Greater Lynchburg Junior Miss. “It’s a great opportunity for them to meet girls they wouldn’t otherwise meet — not just to get together and compete, but to build friendships.”
This year, 18 local girls will take part in the program, scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday in the E.C. Glass High School auditorium.
Coming in, 45 percent of the scoring has already been done, based on interviews and scholastic achievement, she says. On Sunday, candidates will compete in three categories: talent, fitness and self-expression, in which they answer a question in eveningwear.
The winner in each category is awarded scholarship money, which totals a little over $6,000 this year, and the top three overall scorers will go on to compete in the state program, which will be in Lynchburg in March.
Tickets to the event are $12 for adults and $8 for students and can be purchased at the door.
