Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Rick Piester says he’s been looking forward to Cherish the Ladies’ next Lynchburg show since the last one, two years ago.
“It’s a rollicking show,” says Piester. “They’re funny. They’re wonderful musicians and wonderful dancers.”
The five-member group of instrumentalists/singers, who gained recognition as the first and only all-women traditional Irish band, are set to perform in the E.C. Glass Auditorium at 8 p.m. Saturday. There will also be a pre-concert presentation about Irish stepdancing from Lori Madden, who teaches classes at the Academy of Fine Arts and runs the Blue Ridge Irish Music School in Charlottesville.
Cherish the Ladies gets their name from a traditional Irish jig, but Piester says their music is more extensive than that.
“It is traditional Irish music, but it’s not all reels and jigs. There’s also another side that’s just (made up of) gorgeous melodies.”
The group has several Irish dancers who travel with them, but they also invite local stepdancing students to join them onstage during performances.
The symphony won’t be onstage for this performance, but it will be back in action next weekend for its first-ever Lynchburg Pops concert, which is scheduled for 8 p.m. March 13 at the James River Conference Center.
A pops concert is basically a concert of popular music, movie music and Broadway show tunes.
Here, Piester says they’ll focus largely on music from Broadway shows like “Phantom of the Opera,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Cats” and “Les Miserables,” as well as a polka and music from the score of “Victory at Sea,” a 1950s TV series.
The symphony is taking its cues from the Boston Pops for this performance.
“They play the same kind of music, but people are seated at tables, and it’s more of a nightclub atmosphere,” Piester says. “It’s nice to be able to share the music with a table full of people and sing along if you want to.”
Cherish the Ladies tickets are $28 for adults, $25 for seniors 62 and older, $10 for students age 13 to 18 or those with a college ID and free for kids 12 and younger. Pops tickets are $25 per person (the price includes snacks, and there will also be a cash bar).
The symphony is also offering a special, in which patrons can buy tickets to both events for a discounted price of $48.
All tickets can be purchased by phone at (434) 845-6604, online at www.LynchburgTickets.com, or in person at Aylor’s Farm and Garden, Givens Books, Hardwick’s Gifts, Lynchburg Music, The Lynchburg Visitor Information Center or at the door.
