The Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra and Jefferson Choral Society are teaming up to present a concert this weekend.
"Glorious Voices" is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday in E.C. Glass High School’s auditorium, with a pre-concert talk by Jonathan Green, music professor and dean of Sweet Briar College, at 3 p.m.
It will feature performances of Felix Mendelssohn’s "Psalm 42" and Antonin Dvorak’s "Te Deum," as well as the premiere of a new setting of "Dies Irae" that was composed by Aaron Garber, Jefferson Choral Society’s (JCS) conductor.
Literally translating to "Day of Wrath," it is based on a
famous 13th century Latin hymn that is best known for being part of the Requiem Mass.
Garber said the original hymn is full of both light and dark moments, "so the music flows back and forth."
"In one section, the full orchestra and the entire chorus are performing," he added. "In the next, you have a harp and a few strings playing, while only the soprano soloist sings.
"It is a gripping text."
The two groups have performed together before, most recently in 2008.
"It’s important to LSO to be able to put on great choral works like the ones we are doing," Bruce Habitzruther, the symphony’s founder and conductor, said in a news release. "And it’s great to be able to premiere a new work like Aaron’s setting of ‘Dies Irae.’ That’s something a small community like ours can’t always do."
Both Habitzruther and Garber will conduct different portions of the concert.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $22.50 for seniors and $5 for students. Call (434) 845-6604 or visit www.lynchburgsymphony.com or www.LynchburgTickets.com for more information.
