Too much sugar is definitely bad for our waistlines but This week's Myth:
Too Much Sugar Causes Diabetes
We checked in with some of you who were mixed on this one.
The Myth is false.
Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine'sDr. Mark Greenawald says, "Sugar in and of itself is not an issue as much as calories are. What happens is the more calories we take in the more weight we have the greater the chances we will develop Type 2 Diabetes... once you have diabetes eating any kind of food whether it be sugar or anything else can cause your blood sugar to go up so it is not necessarily sugar itself that can do that."
I did a little research on the Virginia Department of Health's website and found in Virginia:
*There is concern about the increase of type two diabetes in younger people.
*In 2007 the prevalence of Diabetes in Virginians was slightly higher than across the country
*Diabetes tends to be more common in Appalachain Counties than others in The Commonwealth.
I found several other myths about diabetes on the American Diabetes Asssociation website.
