Hip hip hooray: Friday Cheers opens season

The Worx will kick off the 19th season of Friday Cheers this weekend.

The outdoor summer concert series will run for 12 weeks and feature a lineup of local, regional and national acts.

Ebony Blue will hit the stage next week, followed by The Groove Monkeys and The Ruckus on June 3; The Holiday Band on June 10; Dragonfly on June 17; Burning Bridges on July 8; Out of Spite on July 15; Signature Soundz on July 22; The Craig Woolard Band on
July 29; and The House Band on Aug. 12.

"It’s a nice mix (with) beach music, R&B, funk," says Anna Bentson, the new executive director of Lynch’s Landing. "It’s going to be a great summer."

Star Country will also be bringing in two national country singers on July 24 and Aug. 5.

Cheers runs from 5:30 to
9 p.m., and the bands usually get going around 6 p.m. Admission is $5, with proceeds going to Lynch’s Landing and various community nonprofits that provide volunteers each week.

Riverviews holding poker night fundraiser

Riverviews Artspace’s latest fundraiser is a poker night scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The event will not involve actual gambling for money, but table prizes that will be given to winners. Every table will have game options and instructions, so organizers say no previous knowledge of poker is necessary.

Tickets are $25 per person or $200 per table (tables seat 8). A cash bar will be available.

Academy of Fine Arts hosting Trustees’ Treasures

The Academy of Fine Arts will also be holding a fundraiser this weekend.

The event is hosted by the Academy’s board of trustees, who each have donated one or more items to the silent auction, live auction and Chinese raffle. One of the highlights will be the auction of a granddaughter clock, made by Phil Johnson, of Chesapeake, out of the beam from the original Academy. Other items include a solid cherry dining room suite, mink jackets, oil paintings, Oriental rugs and a Moser rocking chair.

Trustees’ Treasures, is set to run from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and will include hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and catering by Catalano’s Delicatessen on Main Street.
