A Special Day, A Special Opportunity

 Today is a special day: it’s 11/11/11. It will be quite some time before the next one rolls around; one hundred years actually. It’s feasible that someone living today could see the next 11/11/11, thanks perhaps to clean living and maybe some medical breakthroughs. For most of us, though, this is it. Enjoy the moment.

Today is also special because it is Veterans Day, when we honor the men and women who serve in our nation’s military. I am not a vet but I definitely appreciate those who give of themselves to protect and defend our country. The editorial cartoon in today’s News & Advance is a powerful reminder and challenge to us as citizens as well as to our leaders.

While the rarity of 11/11/11 may be an amusing diversion, the real significance of today is in recognizing the sacrifice of our military personnel. They deserve our full support.
