To protect your hearing, audiologists recommend keeping the volume on iPods and other devices at a reasonable level.
Audiologist Carole Read, of Blue Ridge Ear, Nose, Throat & Plastic Surgery in Lynchburg, tells parents with kids who wear iPods, “If you can hear their music when they have the buds in their ears, it’s too loud.”
Read also recommends wearing ear protection in loud environments, such as concerts or when mowing the lawn or using other equipment, and said she even wears earplugs while using a blow dryer.
There are also earplugs designed specifically for musicians that “turn off the harmful sounds” but allow the musician to “still hear enough to play their music,” she said.
The custom-made earplugs cost $100 to $200 per set, but are less expensive than a hearing aid, which can cost $2,000 or $3,000 per ear.
“I always tell people, ‘Wear your ear protection now or you’ll wear hearing aids later,’” Read said.
