Pick your poison. That’s what Nelson County dared Gretna to do throughout the team’s Dogwood District tournament quarterfinal matchup Saturday evening and it seemed that whatever the Hawks threw at the Governors, Nelson had a response.

Harris played to the Wildcats’ strength and used a suffocating full-court press that wore down the Governors in the second half. Dan River also got contributions from its strong supporting cast in the final 16 minutes for a 60-52 victory Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Dogwood District tournament.
Playing before a near-packed house for its Winterfest weekend, Liberty Christian Academy’s boys basketball team kept within striking distance for most of Friday night’s game against cross-town Virginia Independent Conference rival Virginia Episcopal School before falling, 52-44. The Bulldogs (10-12, 0-5 VIC) seized a 26-23 lead at the start of the second half on 3-pointers by Josh Barrick and Zach Clinton before allowing the Bishops (14-3, 4-2) to close the third quarter on a 13-2 run.
The E.C. Glass boys’ and girls’ track squads are heading into today’s Seminole District finals with confidence, after taking an early lead in field events on Friday. Not only did Glass dominate the team rankings on the girls’ side with 66 points to second-place Heritage’s 36, the Hilltoppers received first-place finishes from senior Patrick Donigan (high jump) and sophomore Matthew Zajac (shot put) to take a commanding lead in the boys’ rankings with 59 points.
One was a four-year starter on the offensive line at Liberty University; the other played and later coached under Rich Rodriguez at Glenville State College, where he studied the spread attack. For both Ben Martin and Brad Bradley, who were approved as the head football coaches at E.C. Glass and Heritage, respectively, on Tuesday night, there was a sense of coming home when they introduced themselves to their new schools this week.
Chatham freshman Jaliyuah Giggetts scored a game-high 13 points as the Cavaliers claimed the Dogwood District regular season title Thursday night with a 37-31 victory over Nelson County.
A recap of the local prep sports action from around the Danville area.
Since sophomore guard Morgan Pannell fractured the fifth metatarsal in her foot last month, Liberty Christian Academy girls basketball coach Tom Brown has had to rework his lineup as he did in the preseason, when last year’s starting point guard, Raven Jefferson, transferred to Oak Hill Academy. Fortunately, he’s found a combination that has worked, putting three of his four post players on the floor at the same time — Alana Arias and Gena Penick, who are averaging right around 12 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots apiece, and Skyler Womack.
Ben Martin and Brad Bradley will be the new head football coaches for E.C. Glass and Heritage high schools, Lynchburg Superintendent Larry Massie announced Tuesday.
Of all the stats recorded in Tuesday night’s Seminole District boys basketball clash between cross-town rivals E.C. Glass and Heritage, one stood out for Hilltoppers coach Roy Roberson and another for Pioneers coach Dan Stephens. "We gave up 17 offensive rebounds tonight, which is really the only stat that matters," Roberson said after the Pioneers’ 70-62 victory before a packed Heritage Field House crowd, avenging an early-season loss at Glass. "That’s the absolute reason that we lost the game."
Dan River, which has been ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press Group A state poll the entire season, easily defeated Altavista, 69-35, on Tuesday night to continue its undefeated season.
The odds are against any team ending Brookville’s 42-year stranglehold on the Seminole District wrestling tournament title today starting at 10 a.m. on the Bees’ home mats. But that’s not going to stop the other six schools, particularly Jefferson Forest and Amherst, from trying.
It was closer than many expected, but the Blue Ridge boys basketball team held off visiting Liberty Christian Academy, 47-42, on Friday.
Jefferson Forest has had more than its share of exceptional swimmers come through its program over the past decade, but few have been as versatile, or more valuable than senior Caleb Williams, the Seminole District boys swimmer of the year.
As Joel Caleb sat in a chair on stage Wednesday morning, ready to make his college announcement, no one else knew which school he was about to select.
After trailing throughout the first half, Altavista’s boys basketball team shifted to a smaller lineup at halftime of its Dogwood District clash with Nelson County, Tuesday night at home.

Brookville’s wrestling team, which will go for its 43rd consecutive Seminole District wrestling tournament championship this Saturday at home, captured its first-ever Big Orange Tournament title this past weekend at William Byrd.
The last time Heritage’s girls basketball team faced Brookville, in early January, the Bees rallied from a halftime deficit to beat the Pioneers on their home court. Monday night at Brookville, where she coached for 13 seasons prior to a five-year stint at E.C. Glass, Heritage coach Tracie Hayes wasn’t about to let another lead slip away, though the Bees sure tried.
RUSTBURG — Any time a close call went Marshall Wood’s way Friday night, the Heritage fans in attendance at Rustburg High School let Wood hear it. "Superstar!" they derided, more to the officials than to the player himself. Wood certainly fits that bill, at least in the Seminole. He’s the district’s only ACC commit, and when the game was on the line Friday night, he played like one.
The E.C. Glass girls’ swim team and the Jefferson Forest boys’ team claimed the Seminole District swimming championships at the Jamerson Family YMCA on Friday night. The Glass girls racked up 166 points on the night, enough to hold off Brookville (142) and Jefferson Forest (119). Despite only claiming first place in one event, the 100 yard breaststroke victory by CT Skorcz, Glass’ depth proved enough for a second consecutive Seminole District championship.
Chatham (13-3, 8-1) sits tied atop the Dogwood standings with Altavista (11-6, 8-1) heading into the final three contests of the regular season.
Andrew White scored all 21 of his team's points in the first quarter of Miller's victory over VES.
It was difficult to keep an eye on Heritage sophomore guard Kadijah Anderson in the Pioneers’ girls basketball game against visiting Rustburg on Thursday. Blink, and you’d miss her. The speedy and aggressive Anderson matched her career high with 20 points and junior guard Chantal Colmore finished with a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists) as the Pioneers rolled over Rustburg, 71-46, for the second time this season.
AMHERST — By dictating the tempo, pushing the ball upcourt and pressing on defense as much as possible, Brookville’s girls basketball team overcame its size disadvantage inside and pulled away from an upstart Amherst squad for a 56-37 road win on Thursday night. "We definitely wanted to get it into the transition game because we knew they’re big in the post and it’s hard for them to get back on defense," said Bees guard Anitra Thomas, who was able to maneuver through traffic and shoot over defenders, leading all scorers with 18 points and grabbing six rebounds.
