Throughout his seven-year career as Brookville’s head football coach, Jeff Woody has emphasized to his teams the importance of maintaining composure through adversity. He certainly was an excellent example for the Bees to emulate this past fall, keeping his cool and remaining calm under pressure through the ups and downs, highs and lows of a perfect season.
After scoring Amherst’s first five points, junior point guard A.J. Richerson got into foul trouble early in Friday night’s Seminole District showdown at Heritage and sat out for long stretches of the first half. He returned after halftime with a renewed mind and purpose and helped seal the Lancers’ 59-54 victory by drawing back-to-back fouls in the backcourt and drilling two free throws with 16 seconds left, extending a two-point lead to four.

An offensive workhorse, Gretna senior Tony Miller didn’t start playing defense with a passion until this past season, when he shifted from outside to inside linebacker and anchored a defense that yielded just 9.3 points per game for the Group A, Division 2 state champion Hawks.
Amherst senior twins Justin and Marcus Thomas found their niches in different places in part so they didn’t have to compete with one another for playing time.

"It was a risk," Jefferson Forest cross country runner Mary Deis said. "It was a big risk." The senior was referring to her gamble to change her training regimen heading into her biggest race of the year and her last race as a Cavalier, the state cross country championships.
FOREST — Things were not going according to plan for host Jefferson Forest’s boys basketball team early in Tuesday’s Seminole District contest against Brookville, a rematch of an early-season overtime triumph in the Bees’ Hive. "When we came out in the first quarter, we didn’t do any of the things we had talked about before the game," Cavaliers coach Paul Smith said. "Our three keys were getting the ball inside, limiting our turnovers and for our defense to keep them out of the lane."
In the top-ranked Wildcats’ 66-45 Dogwood District victory Tuesday over Gretna, Dan River exhibited the beautiful and fluid motion of its pressing defense and up-tempo offense that makes the team so dangerous.

Quantity overcame quality in E.C. Glass’ boys and girls swim teams’ Seminole District dual meet sweep of Brookville, Friday night at the Downtown Lynchburg YMCA pool. The Hilltoppers used superior numbers to edge the Bees, who featured a couple more elite swimmers on both sides. Jefferson Forest 160-pound senior Josh Bowyer still grapples with the death of his older brother Chris, a former football and wrestling standout at JF who took his own life the summer before his freshman year at Virginia Tech in 2008. But rather than dwelling on the loss of his only sibling, he’s kept it in perspective, using it as motivation.
AMHERST — When E.C. Glass’ Daniel Bowling tied Tuesday night’s Seminole District showdown with Amherst at 30 less than 10 seconds into the second half, most of the Lancer faithful in attendance expected a shootout. "They hit a 3 coming out of the half and I thought, ‘Here we go. We’re going to have a dogfight the rest of the way,’" Amherst coach Eddie Carter said.
Liberty Christian Academy senior William Miller won the 500 meters by nearly two seconds in 1:07.02 and anchored the runner-up 1,600 relay (3:34.08), setting school records in both to highlight Saturday’s Bulldog Invitational at Liberty University’s Tolsma Indoor Track Center.
APPOMATTOX — By the time that Dan River had shot out to a 19-point lead in the first minutes Friday night, Appomattox coach Travis Cottrell knew what the problem was. "I think we hyped them up in our minds a lot more than what was actually going on," Cottrell said of the Raiders’ opponent, Dan River, which used a sublime opening 10 minutes of basketball to build a huge lead and cruise to a 70-53 win. "I think our kids thought they were playing a Division I championship team. I mean, they’re a great team. But we can actually play with them. Once we settled down, it was more back and forth."
RUSTBURG — Besides being an exceptional athlete, and one of the more powerful spikers and jump servers to come through the Lynchburg area, Rustburg senior outside hitter Michelle Heath has a pretty good head on her shoulders, as she showed by committing to continue her volleyball career at William & Mary at Friday afternoon’s signing ceremony. She brings a stellar athletic and academic résumé to Williamsburg, where she plans to study for a career in forensics.
Brookville girls basketball coach Warner Dyke lit a fire under the Bees during two third-quarter timeouts and they responded, outscoring host Heritage 23-11 in the fourth quarter of Friday’s 57-50 triumph. "I just thought we were being passive at both ends of the floor," Dyke said. "I didn’t think we were attacking the basket. I didn’t feel like we were playing very aggressively defensively. When our aggressiveness picked up, we started playing better."
