HIGH POINT, N.C. — There are times in baseball where the numbers indeed do lie, something that Liberty baseball coach Jim Toman firmly believes when it comes to his catcher, Trey Wimmer. Wimmer’s raw numbers paint a picture of ineffectiveness: A .222 batting average and .271 slugging percentage, both numbers well below what he produced in 2010 before a devastating knee injury cost him a season.
At the end of April, after Coastal Carolina swept Liberty at Worthington Stadium to end any real shot the Flames had at earning an at-large bid to an NCAA regional, the Flames’ coaching staff re-adjusted the team’s priorities and goals: Get healthy, and make a run in High Point.

Coastal Carolina’s Big South success in the last decade is no fluke. The Chanticleers have had some of the best seasons of any mid-major in Division I baseball in recent years. They’ve made two Super Regional trips. Since 2005, they’ve won 50 games in a season four times. They’ve had numerous players drafted, including current Hillcats standout Tommy La Stella.
The “3-1” pickoff move in baseball is one that is executed to perfection so rarely that any time a pitcher tries it, the crowd usually reacts with boos, expletives and screams for umpires to call a balk.

For there to be a movement, there has to be a pioneer, one that sets the wheels in motion. In the case of Liberty baseball, those forerunners were Curran Redal and Zane Bator, a couple of junior college players from Washington state who took a chance on a Christian university in the Mid-Atlantic not many out that way knew existed.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — UNC Asheville pitcher Ryan Dull held Liberty University’s baseball team in check, shutting out the Flames for the first time this season, 2-0, in the second game of their Big South Conference series Saturday. Dull (3-4) did not allow a run over the first 7 1/3 innings, tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts, scattering seven hits before Brian Connolly pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for his second save.
When Liberty coach Turner Gill chose to switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense, he cited the desire for speed and aggressiveness from the Flames’ front seven. Quarterback Tyler Brennan knows all about that explosiveness after the Flames’ annual spring scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Williams Stadium. "Our defensive line has been playing great, and they looked real good today," Brennan said. "They put a lot of pressure on the quarterback with a four-down front, and they make us make our decisions quick. It showed today."
UNC Ashville’s Thomas Bess scored on a wild pitch in the 13th inning to send the Bulldogs past Liberty, 7-6, at Greenwood Field. Liberty (31-11, 9-4) trailed 5-3 entering the ninth inning, but took the lead with a three-run frame. Asheville (18-21, 7-9) knotted the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth to send the contest into extra innings.
