Halloween happenings, for grown-ups and kids

It’s been more than 10 years since the last time Halloween fell on a Saturday.

This year, local venues are hosting a slew of events for adults and children.

Read on for all the details:

Adults

- Big Lick Tropical Grill’s (4001 Murray Place) Adult Halloween Party is from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., with karaoke by Alma Hesson and a costume contest. Call (434) 528-3604 for more information.

- Bull Branch’s (109 11th St.) Annual Halloween Houhah starts at 10 p.m. and will feature music, scary movies projected onto the walls and prizes for the best costumes. Admission is $3. For more information, call (434) 847-8477.

- Cattle Annie’s (4009 Murray Place) is holding a Halloween October Fest Bash that kicks off at 7 p.m. Admission is $10, and prizes will be handed out for funniest, scariest and most original costumes. Call (434) 846-3206 for more information.

- HallowBash of the Burg, a music talent show and costume party, is being held at the One Community Center at 1415 Kemper St. from 7 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $5 with a costume and $10 without. - The Holiday Inn Select (601 Main St.) is hosting a “Trick and Treat Masquerade Ball” from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The House Band is providing the music, in-house illusionist Jonathan Phillips the tricks and local restaurants like The Depot Grille, Waterstone and Lunchbag on Main the food.

There will be a cash bar and prize for best costume at this 21 and older event.

- The Neighbor’s Place (104 Paulette Circle) Halloween party runs from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., with no cover charge. A DJ will spin tunes, and winners of the costume contest will receive anywhere from $50 to $100 in Neighbor’s Place gift certificates. For more information, call (434) 455-4300.

- Rivermont Pizza’s (2496 Rivermont Ave.) event will feature music by local band Steal the Prize.

- Starlight Café, (512 5th St.) Halloween party from 8:30 p.m. to midnight with burlesque by Richmond Varietease, live music by Charlottesville’s Dirty Horse (Christian Breeden) and fire dancing by Scintillation. Best costume wins a $50 Starlight gift certificate. Show is open to 18 and older only. Cash bar.

Kids

- American Legion Post 16 (1301 Greenview Dr.) is hosting a Halloween party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., for kids ages 12 and younger. Lunch will be served and prizes awarded. There is no charge. For more information, call (434) 239-0316.

- Big Lick Tropical Grill’s (4001 Murray Place) Kids Halloween Party, based around an Alice in Wonderland theme, is from 5 to 8 p.m. and will feature kids’ karaoke with Alma Hesson and a costume contest for kids in three different age groups: infant to 4 years old, 5 to 8 and 9 to 12. - From 3 to 5 p.m., the Jamerson Family YMCA (801 Wyndhurst Dr.) will have trick or treating, a haunted hallway, a maze, pony rides, inflatables, crafts, face painting, clowns, balloon animals and refreshments. Admission is $5 per child. Call (434) 582-1900.

- The Kemper Street Market (1423 Kemper St.) is hosting a free Kids Halloween Party, for ages 12 and younger, from 4 to 7 p.m. Call (434) 845-0057.

- Smith Mountain Lake State Park’s (1235 State Park Rd. in Huddleston) Goblins & Goodies features crafts, pumpkin painting, hayrides and a costume contest in two age groups: up to 5 years old and 6 years old and older. The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. Call (540) 297-5998.

- Thomas Road Baptist Church’s (1 Mountain View Road) Kid’s Karnival, featuring trunk-n-treat, giant inflatables, a huge box maze, games and prizes, is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the indoor track. The event is free. Call (434) 239-9281.

- Timberlake United Methodist Church’s (21649 Timberlake Rd.) Trunk-or-Treat Celebration will feature games, face painting, food and more from 5 to 8 p.m. If it rains, activities will be held inside. Call (434) 239-1348.

- For the Timbrook Library’s (21039 Timberlake Rd.) Pirate Day, Cap’n Mad Mike Read and his ship’s crew will tell ghostly tales and host a treasure hunt from noon to 2 p.m. The event is for ages 5 to 12 years old, and kids are encouraged to dress up (it doesn’t have to be pirate-themed). Food will be available for purchase.

- Tree of Life Ministries’ (2812 Greenview Dr.) Fall Night of Lights is free and will feature super blow-ups, hay rides, live entertainment, door prizes, a Velcro sticky wall, a pig pickin’ barbecue dinner and free hot dogs for the first 500 kids to arrive. It runs from 5 to 9 p.m.
