A new-look Virginia delegation to be sworn in Tuesday

With Tuesday’s swearing-in ceremonies, Virginia’s congressional delegation will take on a new cast, adding a second Democratic senator and three new Democratic House of Representatives members.

Democrats will hold both Senate seats for the first time since 1970. With six Democrats and five Republicans, Democrats will hold a majority in the state’s House delegation for the first time since the early 1990s. Here’s a look at Virginia’s new lineup:

Senators

Jim Webb, Democrat

- First elected: 2006

- Background: Webb, 62, a decorated Marine platoon and company commander in Vietnam, is a lawyer, a novelist and a former secretary of the Navy.

Mark Warner, Democrat

- First elected: Nov. 4 to succeed the retiring John W. Warner

- Background: Mark Warner, 54, a former venture capitalist and former managing director of Columbia Capital Corp., was chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party from 1993 to 1995; a U.S. Senate candidate in 1996; and governor from 2002 to 2006.

 

Representatives

Robert J. Wittman, 1st District, Republican

- First elected: December 2007 to succeed the late Jo Ann Davis

- Background: Wittman, 49, served on the Montross Town Council, 1986-1996; the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors, 1996-2005; and in the Virginia House of Delegates, 2006-2007

 

Glenn Nye, 2nd District, Democrat

- First elected: Nov. 4, defeating Rep. Thelma Drake

- Background: Nye, 34, is a former Foreign Service officer, with service in Kosovo, Macedonia, Singapore, Afghanistan and Iraq

 

Robert C. Scott, 3rd District, Democrat

- First elected: 1992

- Background: Scott, 61, served in the House of Delegates from 1979 to 1983 and in the state Senate from 1983 to 1993.

 

J. Randy Forbes, 4th District, Republican

- First elected: June 2001 to succeed the late Norman Sisisky

- Background: Forbes, 56, served in the House of Delegates from 1989 to 1997 and in the state Senate from 1997 to 2001. He was chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia from 1996 to 2001.

 

Tom Perriello, 5th District, Democrat

- First elected: Nov. 4, defeating Rep. Virgil Goode

- Background: Perriello, 34, has been a national-security consultant, a co-founder of faith-based organizations and an instructor at the University of Virginia School of Law.

Bob Goodlatte, 6th District, Republican

- First elected: 1992.

- Background: Goodlatte, 56, was district director for Rep. M. Caldwell Butler from 1977 to 1979.

Eric I. Cantor, 7th District, Republican

- First elected: 2000

- Background: Cantor, 45, is the No. 2 Republican in the House. Served in the House of Delegates from 1991 to 2000.

 

James P. Moran, 8th District, Democrat

- First elected: 1990

- Background: Moran, 63, served on the Alexandria City Council from 1979 to 1982 and was Alexandria’s mayor from 1985 to 1990.

 

Rick Boucher, 9th District, Democrat

- First elected: 1982.

- Background: Boucher, 62, served in the Virginia state Senate from 1974 to 1982.

 

Frank R. Wolf, 10th District, Republican

- First elected: 1980

- Background: Wolf, 69, was a legislative assistant, served in the Interior Department in the Nixon and Ford administrations.

Gerald Connolly, 11th District, Democrat

- First elected: Nov. 4 to succeed retiring Rep. Thomas M. Davis III, a Republican.

- Background: Connolly, 58, a member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors since 1995.
