An Appomattox man died Monday afternoon after a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 460 in the Spout Spring area of Appomattox County.

The incident occurred at about 1:40 p.m., and Christopher M. Pennix Sr., of Promised Land Road, was pronounced dead at Lynchburg General Hospital at 2:52 p.m. He was 61 years old.

Virginia State Police Trooper J.M. Buzzard said Pennix was driving a 2006 Chevrolet HHR on Snapps Mill Road. He stopped at the intersection with U.S. 460, and then proceeded to cut across the highway to turn left and travel east.

Before he had crossed the westbound lanes of U.S. 460, his vehicle was struck by a 1991 Ford F-150 traveling west in the left lane, driven by Samuel Reese Jr. of Chesapeake.

Pennix “pulled out in front of the other vehicle,” Buzzard said.

The collision pushed Pennix’s vehicle into the median and totaled both vehicles, Buzzard said. Reese, 67, received minor injuries.

A helicopter was called to transport Pennix, but Buzzard said the call was canceled when Pennix started coding, meaning his vital signs stopped.

Pennix was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital by ground transportation.

No charges were filed in the incident, Buzzard said.
