HUDDLESTON - A Bedford County man has a colony of honey bees making his chimney their home.
“It’s got to be a couple of thousand I would guess. It’s almost like someone’s colony, that somebody opened a door and let them out and they decided to move in here” said William Butt.
You can feel and hear the bees through the wall of an upstairs bedroom. The house was built around 1900, and Butt has lived there for nine years.
In his time there, Butt has not seen a problem with bees, but he did say it was not the first time something has been living in his chimney.
“Last year I had about 500 sparrows living in there. You don’t live here for free, so if you come in and don’t have any money I run them off,“ Butt told us with a laugh.
The bees have not bothered Butt or his family since they arrived; he just wants them gone.
“I hate to exterminate them because I know there is a shortage of honey bees. If somebody wanted to come get them, they are welcome to them,“ Butt said.
