The third gun surrender event held in conjunction between Churches United for Service and the Lynchburg Police Department exceeded the expectations of organizers Saturday afternoon.
Citizens surrendered six firearms and a pellet gun Saturday, said the Rev. James Coleman, of Churches United for Service, which more than doubled the amount of guns turned in previously.
Coleman said he estimated about 100 people turned out for the event, held at the James Crossing Apartments — a change from the group’s usual Miller Park location.
“The difference today is that we launched a neighborhood initiative,” he said.
The initiative, he explained, will be a Churches United for Service-led effort to construct a pavilion where residents can hold gatherings and events.
In attendance at Saturday’s event, among other city leaders and police personnel, were Virginia Del. Shannon Valentine, D-Lynchburg, and Lynchburg Vice Mayor Bert Dodson.
“I think we’ve struck something now,” Coleman said, particularly of the amount of guns surrendered.
He said he was contacted by one resident who told Coleman that he had eight guns to surrender, but was unable to do so at James Crossing because of legal restrictions.
Coleman said the group is working with that resident to find a way that the guns can be turned in.
“We think that it’s going to only increase,” Coleman said, regarding the number of guns surrendered.
One issue the effort has faced, he said, is citizens unwilling to surrender their guns if they won’t receive any compensation other than a chance to win the much-hyped retired police cruiser.
Coleman said organizers are attempting to procure gift certificates and other bonuses from area businesses as token prizes for anyone willing to surrender a firearm.
“Anyone that turns in a gun, they’re going to get something,” he said, “that will be a tangible blessing to them.”
That, he said, is in addition to the Bibles and other information given out at each event.
Of the ultimate prize, the 2000 Chevy Impala with an impressive new paint job, Coleman said work is coming along well, and more upgrades are to come, such as a new sound system.
“It already looks like something that anybody would want to have,” he said.
Coleman said no future dates have been planned, but he envisions several more events around Lynchburg, each in a different area.
“We are not going to rest until we’ve done all we can to saturate the community,” he said.

Anyone else want to setup a table somewhere in the same neighborhood and offer to actually pay for these guns instead of letting the city destroy them? Private sales are perfectly legal here in VA and I think most of these folks would rather have $150 in their pocket than a “chance” at winning a car.
Those who think the unemployment rate is only 9-10% are not considering those who have given up looking for work and are not on the unemployment rolls. If we estimate this number, it actually comes to about 20.5% according to some leading economists. It is dangerous to believe the govt. are telling the truth, as their primary interest is for their own power. If this were not true, they would protect the rights of American workers and protect employment instead of causing a crisis with their fiat currency printing.
Those who gave up their guns, well are just sheep.
I wanted to add one more comment. I went in on explaining my stance but did not present a lot of evidene. The comments that are below are very accurate and I would highly recommend readers to view infowars in addition to the great local media.I will add one more good source. It it bloomberg.com in reference to the federal reserve and its spending. The majority of the money is going to off shore banks and toxic investments. This is just one example of how the reality of things is not being presented to the majority (ron paul audit the fed 1207). We the people have only recieved about 12% of the fed spending. The spending is backed by our labor in US.

I just wanted to reply to your comment. I appreciate your response. Yes, you are right, according to the government. The unemployment rate is only 9.5. The problem is, due to the grace of GOD, I have been shown the truth. I started praying for God to show me the truth about 10 months ago. This was because I walked into a supermarket in Tennessee and saw 20 magazines all about Obama. This sent me to flash backs of the stories my grandgather told me about while he was in the Battle Of the Bulge at 18 years old. Hitler came to my mind and how the German govt used the media to capture the minds of the majority. I am not saying comparing Obama to Hitler. I am just asking people to see through the deception. THIS IS PROPANGANDA JUST AS THE MAJORITY OF THE MEDIA. What is 100 million to a man who can but the rights to a large media group when the same man has billions. Do you see what I am saying? My wife even has a hard time believing reality. God has blessed me with giving me many the means to the truth. When I first found out I was stomach sick for a month.Do you think I like being like that? No way my friends. I just ask you to break outside of the media and talking heads and due some research on your own. The global elite mean business. I do not like this either.As an example, there are many laws going after free speech, guns, property, etc. that you will not hear about on the cable news. I used to believe everything I saw on FOX news because it was conservative and I had conservative view points. I am also a vet and love this country. Long story short, (i dont expect readers to believe in God, I am just sharing my experience), we are under attack at many angles. We need to grasp the constitution and hold on. loveliberty, I’m not going to get in a discussion about guns and Bibles, because you all seem like scary people, but the unemployment rate is NOT over 20%—it’s not even over 10%. As of the end of June, it was 9.5% (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm). If you’re going to make up statistics, at least TRY to make them believable.

Learn about the Federal Reserve. Learn about genetically modified foods. Learn about chem trails. Learn about John P. Holdren who is the new head of the Office of Science and Technology Policy for the Obama Administration. Holdren wrote a book 32 years ago in 1977 saying that the government should have forced abortions and mandatory sterilizations. He went further by saying the government should put sterilization drugs in our food and water supply. You think this is a joke? Go ahead and laugh. Better yet –go to infowars.com and read the actual documentation for yourself. The American people need to start a crash course to learn about Eugenics or we are all toast. Sorry folks, this is real.
The police getting together with the church to collect guns from its citizens should concern every free-thinking individual that reads this article.
Has anyone ever heard seperation of CHURCH AND STATE? That’s not just about law-making, ya know. However, this is only the beginning.
If you go to Youtube and type in the search engine, “CLERGY RESPONCE TEAMS,“ or at the end of the youtube site name type in, “/watch?v=SRIDNQNsUss” you will watch as the government ADMITS it is PAYING over 50,000 pastures, priests, and preachers to go out and convince people, in case of an emergency, to do whatever they are told, surrender their weapons, take injections, and go to FEMA camps. They are being taught to MISINTERPERET Romans 13 to convince the people that any and all authority comes from God and therefore should be obeyed. This, of course is nonsense, but people believe it because their preacher is saying it.
Is your church a 501c3? Does your church recieve federal money in exchange for lessons being taught to the congregation? Is you preacher, pastor, or priest recieving money for this type of activities? They are told to keep it secret, would they lie to you in order to maintain the secrecy of the program? These are issues you should discuss with your church!!!
And about the 6 measly guns, and oh yea, a pellet gun. What a “success!!!“ “Double last year.“ How about that? Did any of them even work? Were they concealable, semi-auto handguns of large caliber, tactical shotguns, or assault rifles of the type commonly used in gun crimes? And, why would it be a legal issue for a unnamed person to bring in 8 guns to this collection piont? What kind of crazy gun laws are you guys passing in Lynchberg that you can’t bring guns to a gun round-up?

Why would anyone turn their guns in? The unemployment rate is over 20 % on a national level and,there is no end in sight for the end of the depression. Do people not care about protecting their families?
