Lynchburg schools’ uniform policy on table

Lynchburg School Board will take up several notable items today and meet for the last time with its current makeup of board members.

Three board terms are expiring at the end of the month, including that of board chair Julie Doyle. Doyle, who has served the maximum number of terms, and board member Leslie Faircloth, who is not seeking another term, will attend their last meeting as appointed officials.

Board member Keith Anderson’s term also expires. He is seeking another term. City Council is set to interview Anderson and other potential board members Friday.

In the meantime, the board plans to recognize Faircloth and Doyle today for their contributions to the school system.

The board will also discuss amending its current uniform policy. According to agenda materials, board members are expected to approve a change requiring students attending the new Fort Hill Community School to wear uniforms.

Once approved, students would wear a long- or short-sleeved blue polo shirt and khaki pants or a skirt. The uniform policy will not apply to students receiving homebound services at the school.

Board members are also slated to discuss and take action on a resolution that would consolidate the city’s and schools’ procurement services. Consolidation of city and school resources has been a long-term goal for area officials, but has taken on new urgency in the face of this year’s budget crunch. The school board is expected to approve a resolution adopting the city’s procurement policies.

Other agenda items for Tuesday’s meeting include the discussion of the division’s broadband contract and approving proposed expenditures for federal stimulus funds.
