The widow of a Gretna man killed in a hunting accident Tuesday said he was a good husband, a great provider to his two daughters and an enthusiastic outdoorsman.
Wayne P. Logan, 57, of Gretna, died after his 12-gauge shotgun, which he had slung around himself with the sling partly tied to the trigger guard, fired into his chest Tuesday morning while he hunted rabbits with friends off Terry Road, Julia Dixon, spokeswoman with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, said Wednesday.
Dixon said officials are unclear how the incident occurred.
“This is a very tragic situation,” she said.
Rhonda J. Logan said her husband was active in church, loved people and had many friends. He also liked hunting and fishing.
Rhonda Logan said the shooting was a “fluke accident.”
She and her husband were married for 33 years, and Logan’s widow remembers the lighter side of their relationship.
“He didn’t believe in wasting or throwing away anything,” she said. “He was a pack rat.”
Rhonda Logan said her husband collected sales receipts and kept clothes after they went out of style.
“His motto was, ‘They’ll come back in someday,’” she said, adding that her husband also enjoyed tinkering with cars.
Wayne Logan grew up in Gretna and the couple had moved back to the town in 2003 after living in Lynchburg for 28 years, his wife said. He was a Vietnam veteran and owned his own trucking company before retiring five years ago.
An autopsy on Logan should be complete by the end of the week, Dixon said.
Dixon provided several hunting tips to avoid accidents:
- Treat any firearm as if it were loaded.
- Never point it at anyone and make sure the safety is on when it’s not in use.
- Only point it at legal game you intend to shoot.
- Before shooting, identify your target and what’s beyond it.
- Keep the firearm unloaded while traveling and wait until you arrive at the hunting location before loading it.
