Staunton River girls upset Brookville in OT

Brookville met the Robinsons on Tuesday night and the Staunton River cousins helped deal the Bees’ girls basketball team its first defeat, 50-49, in overtime.
Laquaksha Robinson scored 15 points, swiped nine steals and grabbed nine rebounds and younger cousin Shaniesha Robinson netted 11 points and nine boards to help the Golden Eagles improve to 3-0 in Seminole District play.
The Bees (7-1, 3-1) had the ball with a chance to win it at the end of overtime, but didn’t get a shot off as Staunton River came up with a steal to secure the victory.
“It was a good game,” Brookville coach Warner Dyke said. “Whenever two of the best teams in the district get together, it’s going to be a battle.”
Point guard Emilee Dunton and shooting guard Katie Deacon each scored 13 points to pace the Bees.
Rustburg 48, Jefferson Forest 47
The Red Devils held off a late JF charge to secure their first Seminole victory of the season.
Rustburg (8-1, 1-1 Seminole) led 47-40 late when Jefferson Forest’s Rachel McKeague hit a 3-pointer while being fouled. She hit the free throw with six seconds left to draw the Cavaliers within 47-44.
JF fouled Sammie Bogolin on the inbounds play, and she hit one of two free throws to push the lead back to four points. Kelsey Clay hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it wasn’t enough.
Shannon Glass led the Red Devils with 16 points, and Gabby Glass notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
McKeague scored 15 points to lead the Cavaliers, and Clay and Renae Brooks scored 11 apiece for JF.
Halifax 50, E.C. Glass 41
Halifax led by 12 at the half, then held off a second-half rally to beat the Hilltoppers.
Mary Grace Lemon put on a one-woman show for Glass, scoring a game-high 21 points and pulling in 11 rebounds.
Nia Brown led Halifax with 12 points.
Altavista 51, Appomattox 25
The Colonels improved to 3-0 in the Dogwood with an easy road victory.
Led by 15 points from Kiki Crews and 11 points from Brook Short, Altavista took an 18-13 lead at halftime and stretched it to 33-21 by the end of three quarters.
Kasey Burks led the Raiders (3-8, 0-2) with eight points.
Liberty 64, Amherst 23
In Amherst, the Minettes raced to a 35-10 halftime lead and cruised to a district victory.
Cat Padgett led Liberty with 14 points. Kiara Garland and Jasmine Ware scored six each for Amherst (0-9, 0-2 Seminole).
Temple Christian 37, Clearview Christian 5
Lindsey Hunter finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Kayla Bryant added seven points and 16 rebounds for Temple (6-2).
Boys
Lord Botetourt 72, Heritage 67
Four Cavaliers scored in double figures and Lord Botetourt outscored the Pioneers 19-13 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
Heritage (5-6) also had four double-figure scorers in the see-saw affair, led by Tevan Crews with 15. Chris Phelps finished with 14, LaKuan McPhaul had 13 and Sylvon Jones added 12.
Dayspring Christian 67, Timberlake Christian 51
B.J. Conklin scored 29 points for the Tornadoes (5-5), but it wasn’t enough to overcome a balanced outing from Dayspring (8-2).
The Tornadoes led 24-18 at halftime, but Dayspring outscored Timberlake 49-27 after the break to take control of the game.
Caleb Knautz scored 17 for Daypring. Jacob Bernard added 16 and Phillip Johnson scored 15.
Eastern Mennonite 81, Holy Cross 31
Brian Eshleman scored 20 points to lead Eastern Mennonite (5-3) to an easy victory.
Chris Roy led the Gaels (1-6, 1-2 VIC) with 17 points, seven rebounds and a blocked shot.
LCA 49, Southside Baptist 36
Despite a furious comeback attempt by Southside in the fourth quarter, LCA improved to 8-2.
Gorgi Branov led the Bulldogs with 14 points and Vik Jankov had 8 points and four steals.
Southside falls to 11-5.
Halifax County 53, E.C. Glass 47
Durrell Chandler and Lemel Adams scored 11 points apiece to lead the Comets (5-4, 1-0 WVD) to a win at E.C. Glass (1-8, 0-1).
Dexter Bowling hit four 3-pointers and scored 18 points in a losing effort for the Hilltoppers, and Alvin Banks added 10 points.
Temple Christian 73, Clearview Christian 33
Jared Barringer scored 16 points to lead Temple (7-3) to the win over winless Clearview (0-9).
Tyler Amburgey had 15 points and 15 rebounds for Temple, which built a 42-16 lead by halftime. Josh Archer led Clearview with 18 points.
William Campbell 55, Gretna 53 (OT)
At Gretna, Timmy Wright hit the go-ahead basket in overtime and Marquis Calloway missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Campbell (2-6, 1-2 Dogwood) trailed 27-21 at halftime and rallied to knot the score at the end of regulation. Wright scored four of his 10 points in the extra period.
Chris Waller led the Generals with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Calloway scored 19 to lead Gretna.
