Steve & Barry’s to close Candlers Station store

The Steve & Barry’s store at Candler’s Station is set to close.

“Store Closing” signs were hung in the store’s windows over Labor Day weekend.

“Everything must go” for $8.98 or less, the signs say. That’s the price tag the company put on all its merchandise last year during a Christmas-season sale.

It is the second store to close at the Candler’s Station shopping center this year.

The discount clothing store Goody’s announced in June that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and that the Lynchburg store would close. The 40,000-square-foot store closed in early August.

Steve & Barry’s LLC announced its own bankruptcy filing July 9. It announced no store closings at that time, however.

The Associated Press reported then that the company had strong sales increases in the first five months of 2008, but that it may have been operating on thin margins, making most of its income from up-front payments by mall owners who wanted to lure the retailer.

On Aug. 22, the company announced that BHY S&B Holdings LLC, a newly-formed affiliate of Bay Harbour Management and York Capitol Management, would buy most of Steve & Barry’s LLC’s assets.

The exact number of Steve & Barry’s stores expected to close has not officially been announced.

The company sent out a news release Tuesday afternoon detail-ing that information, but then said the chain-wide list of closures was not finalized and the news release was inaccurate.

Rachel Brenner, Steve & Barry’s senior manager of public relations, confirmed that the Lynchburg store is closing.

Candler’s Station is still home to the popular Cinemark 10 discount movie theater, several restaurants, clothing retailers Rugged Wearhouse and T.J. Maxx and several other stores.

But it is also home to nearly 170,000 square feet of vacant retail space, including the Goody’s space and a former Circuit City store, according to the Web site for Developer’s Diversified Realty advertising the property.

The Steve & Barry’s at Candler’s Station would add 24,287 square feet to that.

how has bush or the fallwell family caused a retail store to close? glad you asked. bush, no, blame him all you want but the last time i knew the congress had to approve everything and if it’s veto’d they still can over rid it. get off bush back i don’t want his job and i’m sure you don’t either. the country just needs a whipping boy. AS for the other, how has the fallwell family “i.e. Liberty"closed a retail store. who owns the plaza? liberty does, they have an outside company managing it, but they own it. S&B;as a company has not close, they went to the land lords to re-work the leases, like any other company would do and those who worked with them stayed open, the others that wouldn’t closed. business 101. other thing to consider, how long was S&B;‘s store location empty? 7-8 years, why would a new tenent put into an long term empty store spot, why would the land lord not try to work with them? wouldn’t if you need the store to leave. thats how the extended fallwell family caused a store to close.

wow i had to re-read the article because i assumed, with all the banter, i missed the obama/mccain referances. nope, let’s try to get back to the issue at hand. S&B;is closing because Liberty has plans for the plaza, thus forcing many to lose their jobs. it has nothing to do with bush, bombs, elections, or freedom of speech. Liberty’s biggest concern now should be where will all the students go to cruise on fri/sat. nights. i spent the better part of 3 years working in that plaza and it wasn’t just the locals in the parking lot “socializing”

Some facts on the economy items:

1) People bought homes they likely could not really afford and lenders were dumb enough to ignore their own lending standards.  No way to combat stupidity.
2) People bet on continued housing value increases at insane rates.  Remember the Internet bubble on Wall Street, welcome to the housing bubble on Main Street.  The current administration along with Congress put in place legislation to attempt to assist those hit by this real estate price bubble.
3) Oil prices shot up driving gas prices up as well.  This was supposively triggered by increased demand for a short-supply commodity.  The current administration without any action from Congress continues to attempt to address what is hitting all of our bank accounts these days.  Perhaps after the election something may happen.  Seems like Nancy and team along with the rest of Congress have not gotten their acts together enough yet to come up with a solution.

I am however interested in knowing more about how the closing of a retail store in Lynchburg was driven by George Bush personally as well as members of the Falwell family.  Companies declaring bankruptcy with strong sales likely are mismanaged and likely underprice their products without covering their costs.  That is simple economics that even the largest airlines are struggling with these days (mostly driven by fuel prices).

Where has Liberty announced their plans for the over 170,000 vacant square feet of real estate in that shopping center?

steve and berry shouldve moved into a bigger store and had more of a variety with collegiate wear. Not knocking liberty but thats the only non-uva/va tech apparel in there. Steve and berrys in va beach and other locations have other school apparels whether they are popular or not for the state schools. guess ill have to pay my $50 for an ODU hoody at s&b;when i return to lynchburg if theyre still open…

ps: retail in lynchburg is like textile companies in Southside Virginia

These comments are great.  We can blame President Bush and Liberty University for Steve and Barry’s financial problems. I got to make sure I get this straight, if it is bad in Lynchburg it is Liberty’s fault.  If things are bad nationally (i.e. weather, economics, wars, terrorism) it is Bush’s fault.  We cannot forget that anything good that happens in Lynchburg or the world, happened in spite of Liberty and Bush’s efforts to ruin everything.

Katrina, high gas prices, and now the financial woes of S&B;.  I’m simply amazed at how powerful Bush has become!

Let’s go one step further with our reasoning skills.
The store is closing because of the economic climate so artfully put together by our wonderboy President Dubya Bush. Bombs are much more important than jobs. When all the stores close on Candler’s Mountain, maybe JJ can turn it into a confessional or something. (Sarcasm intended)
Amy, don’t even for a minute think that your complaining (or prayers) had anything to do with that store’s closing. It’s part of a nationwide economic meltdown. You should be more concerned than jubilant.
And yes Amy, I am an Obama supporter. I’m proud of it, although considering the alternative, the powers that be haven’t given me much choice.

your arguing over t-shirts when the issue should be why they are closing. the reason is that there landlord LIBERTY UNIVERSITY, refused to rework the lease. they have other plans for the center, lol maybe a ski lodge!! so liberty has made how many people lose there jobs? and when they convert it over how many people and businesses will be lost? all in the name of what? before you think i’m the typical liberty blog basher think again, most of you never will grow a pair to take them on, it’s all big business, just like wal-mart. no difference at all. when you cry that they pay no taxes remember you elected the officals that supported that and the next time you go to the new home of the liberty law scholl at candlers mt. st. remember you allowed it.

Actually, Amy, you did at least imply they shouldn’t be allowed to have the shirts, hence the fit you described throwing in the store.  They’re allowed to put the shirts wherever they please - the reality is that the store is private property and you are a guest on it.  They’re allowed to sell whatever slogans they want and place them wherever they want.  Marketing 101: people won’t buy things they can’t see for sale.  How would someone know the shirt was for sale unless they actually displayed the shirt?  And don’t bother with the “adults only” suggestion.  You know as well as I do that the people who love to impose their morals on others in Lynchburg would be all over protesting and exposing those who would even think to look at a stupid shirt.
As for explaining to your kids what “Orgasm Donor” means, do what my parents did: look it up and explain it in medical and clinical terms and have “the talk” as soon as they ask.  If you tell them the facts first, they’ll be better at identifying the real information.  Hiding your kid from that stuff doesn’t stop it from existing.
And by the way: what makes you think I’m a Democrat and/or supporting Obama?  As for reasoning skills, let’s look at your own: that because you didn’t get your way in a store or because of a letter you wrote, S&B;‘s - a source of jobs and inexpensive, quality-made clothing - deserves to close.  Sounds like the Communist Party would love your reasoning skills.

Never said anything about the fact that they shouldn’t be allowed to have derogatory slogans on their t-shirts. So, 1st Ammend. argument is off the table. Thanks, though.
I did take my money elsewhere, and I told my friends, and they did the same as well. We all wrote letters and told them we were not shopping there.
And BTW, do you want to walk into a family clothing store and have to explain to your young child what “Orgasm Donor” means? Ok, I didn’t think so! When it’s displayed on a high shelf so you see it when you walk in the store, that is unacceptable for a family store! I understand if the store sells the shirt, but not in its placement of it.
Both of your reasoning skills would lend themselves nicely to the Obama campaign - LOL!
