‘Abigail Adams’ to visit Amherst

The Amherst County Museum and Historical Society seems to get the VIPs at its annual meeting, and this year it’s “Abigail Adams.”

Adams, wife of second president John Adams, will make herself known at the Sept. 26 get-together at 11:30 a.m. at Winton Country Club, thanks to Abigail Schumann of Colonial Williamsburg Productions. She carries on what has become tradition for the museum and historical society’s main event, a tradition that began with the likes of “Thomas Jefferson.”

Schumann, of Williamsburg, produces educational TV programs about early American history, which are broadcast on PBS. Last year, she won four Emmy awards.

Schumann has been a historical interpreter for 25 years and performs in Colonial Williamsburg’s 18th century play series.

In 1997, she wrote a one-woman show, “Our Common Passage,” about the experiences of four women during the American Revolution.

In 2001, she began portraying Abigail Adams in the stage play, “Jefferson and Adams,” by Howard Ginsberg. From that play, she developed her own character portrayal of the second first lady.
