The Lynchburg Community Market issued the Chocolate Challenge last week, and some area cooks took the cake(s).
The first-, second- and third-place contest winners, respectively:

Michelle Carwile’s Favorite Brownies
1½ cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups sugar
8 tablespoons cocoa
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
¼ cup water
2 ounces bittersweet chocolate baking bar, melted
2/3 cup coconut
6 ounces mini chocolate chips

Mix all ingredients. Pour in 13- by 9½-inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
