Ask Karen: What causes Fall allergies?

QUESTION: I have noticed that my fall allergies are REALLY acting up early this year — in the spring we have pollen, but what is in the air in the fall? Also, is it true that a good snow or freeze can kill allergens in the air?

ANSWER: When fall rolls around it can be difficult to determine whether our allergy symptoms are a cold or an actual allergic reaction. During fall allergy season, ragweed and mold are the most common culprits for allergy angst.

I have talked with Jefferson Surgical’s Dr. Geoffrey Harter about this issue in the past and he tells me allergy symptoms typically start in August and last through November. While rain can wash allergens from the air it also aggravates mold allergies.

In answer to the second part of your question, yes, a good frost can provide allergy relief.
