Lynchburg’s new movie theater: Not the cheap seats
Chet White/The News & Advance
The new River Ridge Stadium 14, located in River Ridge mall, held its grand opening last Friday.
The first time I stepped into a stadium seating movie theater was in 2002.
It was the summer between my sophomore and junior years of college, and I was doing an internship in New York City.
One night, a friend and I decided to check out a movie theater in Times Square, and I was astounded at what I saw. It was unlike anything I’d ever experienced growing up in Lynchburg.
For quite awhile, I was convinced that only big cities like New York and L.A. had those kinds of theaters. I’d spin tales for my friends about the big-city movie experience. Huge, comfortable seats. All that leg room. Food options way beyond a simple bag of popcorn or a box of candy.
I guess the joke was on me.
I’m not quite sure when the wake-up call came that stadium-seating theaters exist everywhere — well, everywhere except Lynchburg until recently — but I’ve now been to my fair share of them.
Still, it was a shock to walk into River Ridge mall last week and find a theater where Value City used to be.
I don’t mean to make Lynchburg’s new Regal Cinemas sound like it’s the second coming, but it is a big deal for those of us who grew up here and never had one.
That side of the mall feels like another world — one I like very much.
The 57,000-square-foot theater opened last Monday for three days of $1 screenings for charities such as the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg, and then had its official grand opening on Friday, when ticket prices went back to their usual $9.50.
The lines never seemed to dwindle at the beginning of the week. Just as many people were there at 10:45 on Tuesday night — my first experience at the theater, a late-night screening of “District 9” — as there were at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Jewel Barao, Regal’s northern region marketing manager, said that between sales of tickets and concessions, they raised $13,500 on Monday, $12,000 on Tuesday and $16,000 on Wednesday.
It’s not surprising. Several people I talked to had been to the theater multiple times, some even multiple times each day, to take advantage of the $1 movies.
But it wasn’t just the bargain prices that got people out.
Many were just as excited as I am to finally have a theater this size in the Hill City.
A quick round-up of its stats: there are 14 screens, for a total of more than 2,400 seats; the two largest theaters seat 314 each; one theater is equipped solely for 3D movies; and the concession stand offers things like coffee and cappuccino, hot dogs, pizza, ice cream and egg rolls. Yes, egg rolls.
“It definitely livens up the place a little bit,” Lynchburg resident Mike Lynchard told me. “I wanted to check it out and see what the vibe is like.”
Opening night also did steady business, said Barao.
And nobody seemed to mind that the $1 prices were done.
“Watching a movie in the theater is about the experience,” said Shannon Justis, who was there with her husband, Steve. “I don’t mind paying more for a better experience.
“The first time walking in, my whole thing was, ‘We’re not in Lynchburg anymore.’”

Not exactly sure you used Seattle, of all places, for comparison to Lynchburgbut if we’re going to….let’s also look at the median incomes of both locales:
(granted, these are fairly old numbers but the point will still stand)
Lynchburg - The median income for a household in the city was $32,234, and the median income for a family was $40,844.
Seattle - The median income for a household in the city was $45,736, and the median income for a family was $62,195.
notice a difference?
I hope all new businesses do well but I just don’t see Lynchburg supporting a new movie theatre for it’s cushy seats and ample leg room for very long any more than it supported the previous establishment. When’s the last time they packed the house in thst one?
Here is the price list for a typical Regal Theater in Seattle. Get over it.
Adult $10.50 Matinee (All shows before 4pm) $8.50 Child $7.50 Senior $8.50 Military $9.
9.50 is expensive for a movie ticket, but this is how it is EVERYWHERE. I have not bought a regular movie ticket since they went up past 6.50, so it’s been a while. I just don’t think it is worth it. I personally would rather go to the dollar theater or wait till it comes out on DVD. Not enough people will boycott to make a difference, so that is a stupid idea. This isn’t a New York price, its an every town, USA price. That’s just how it is now.
Evidently there are some in Lynchburg that haven’t kept up with the economy…when prices go up on one thing, others follow…it has got to cost more to operate a theater today than it did in years past, and unfortunately those costs must be absorbed by admission fees.
A reasonable price to pay to spend an evening in such a glamour filled environment, an escape from the normal daily routine spent in a dreamscape of neon…not your everyday theater experience by far….
I for one would rather treat myself to an evening like this, than pay a cheap price for a cheap setting.
YES WE CAN! lolz
I just think it is so hysterical how people are just so in awe of this movie theater. Folks, they have been making theaters like this for quite some time. They have ones similar in adjacent cities. I suppose the amusing aspect of all of this is how LONG it took for a city the size of Lynchburg to get a movie theater with the modern conveniences people in Roanoke and Charlottesville have been enjoying for years. I guess that ever-present resistance to change is still alive and well in Lynchburg. But we do now have this really nice movie theater to enjoy! Now, see Lynchburg, change isn’t really all that bad, is it?!
Are you kidding me lookatu? Have you been to a movie at the Plaza lately? Or the old mall theater? $9.25 for an evening showing.. that’s is the definition of a ripoff.
Sometimes I cannot avoid being ripped off but I can avoid paying $9.50 to attend a movie. This is the biggest rip off to hit Lynchburg. Making movie stars rich is not my thing. The theater is certainly nice and a great improvement over the past but everyone should boycott this theater until the prices are reduced, and they will be. Buy something at the concession stand and you have spent $20.00. I don’t live in New York and I refuse to pay their prices. I don’t understand how most of the college students can pay this price.
