ACHIEVEMENTS
Appomattox
- Appomattox County High School student Amanda Dolan was recently honored for her volunteer service with a state-level Certificate of Excellence from The 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program and a President’s Volunteer Service Award from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Dolan volunteers with the following groups: 4-H Camp, Relay for Life, Appomattox Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, summer fishing camp and children’s church. She is also the captain of the marching band’s color guard, a member of the National Honor Society and has lettered academically and in sports.
- The following Appomattox Elementary School students were recognized recently on the Reading Safari: Timothy McConville, Tywan Haskins, Tristan Hensley, Hailey Crist, Jaime Smith, Trenton Richardson, Dakota Roach, Dareal Jackson, Michael Mays, Deontre Walker, Avery Mundy, Zane McCoy, Tyler Bohannon, Chase Mayberry, Michelle Childress, India Graves and Dre Perkins.
Bedford
- Otter River Elementary School teacher Kristin Witt recently received a $600 grant from the Bedford Area Educational Foundation. The money will be used to purchase a document camera for Witt’s classroom.
- The Jefferson Forest High School’s Advanced Symphonic Band received its eighth consecutive unanimous ‘Superior’ rating in Grade 6 at the District Band and Orchestra Festival held recently at E.C. Glass High School.
- Jefferson Forest High School band member Andrea Gingrich was named to the All-State Band during auditions held recently at James Madison University. Gingrich plays the oboe.
- Thomas Jefferson Elementary School’s Math-a-Thon raised more than $5,300 in February for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital cancer research. The top four fundraisers were Sam Owen ($376), Ellie Hill ($350), Houston Crowder ($307) and Tucker Morehead ($301).
- Thomas Jefferson Elementary School’s Jump Rope for Heart raised more than $8,300 in February. The top five fundraisers were Madilyn Tucker ($325), Alex Johnson ($260), Erin Toney ($225), Logan Fifer ($205) and Kerry Sendrick ($176). The top five classes were Tibbs ($1,307), Springer ($764), Provost, ($650), Parece ($614) and Mountcastle ($547).
Private Schools
- Holy Cross Regional Catholic School students William Loftus and Nina Rezai earned third place in the National Catholic Forensic League’s State Tournament. They will advance to the national tournament to be held in Albany, N.Y.
SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
Amherst County
- Elon Ruritan Club will be granting two college scholarships to area seniors. Applications are due March 27 and may be obtained from the guidance counselors office at Amherst County High School or by calling Henry Allen at 384-1670. Public, private and homeschooled students are encouraged to apply and will be judged based on grades, extracurricular activities, volunteer efforts and character references.
