ACHIEVEMENTS
Bedford
- The following Jefferson Forest High School students took first place honors in the State DECA Marketing Competition and will be eligible to compete at the International Career Development Conference to be held in April in Anaheim, Calif.: Kathryn Inman, first place and overall winner, Impromptu Business Presentation 1, Restaurant and Food Service Management; Jordan Noyes, first place and overall winner, Impromptu Business Presentation 1, Food Marketing Management; Kirk Hicks, first place, Impromptu Business Presentation 1, Automotive Services Management; Thomas Bourne, first place, Impromptu Business Presentation 1, Business-to-Business Event; and J.J. Cohick and Tyler Litz, overall winners, Internet Marketing Team Decision Making.
Lynchburg
- Bedford Hills Elementary School’s Roots and Shoots program was selected from more than 1,000 kids’ gardening programs to receive a 2009 Youth Garden Grant from the National Gardening Association. The school will receive an assortment of books from the National Gardening Association and a $500 gift card from The Home Depot.
- E.C. Glass High School Theatre’s production of ‘Ellis Island: The Dream of America’ received a ‘Superior Rating’ at the Southeastern Theatre Conference held March 7-8 in Birmingham, Ala. Cast members Frannie Carey and Christian Paxton were named to the 15-member all-star cast h onoring the best performances in the festival. The entire cast was honored as ‘Best Ensemble.’ J.D. Stallings and the Technical Theatre crew were honored for having the ‘Best Technical Performance.’ Glass choreographer Tom Harris and his dancers were honored for having the ‘Best Choreography and Performance.’
- E.C. Glass High School dental careers teacher Sandy Williams recently received Virginia Tech’s 2009 Excellence in Education Award for Public Schools for her program, ‘Your Smile ... A Work of Heart.’ Williams will receive a plaque and $500 to support the program. The program will also be featured on the Virginia Tech School of Education homepage (http://www.soe.vt.edu).
- The E.C. Glass High School Air Force JROTC Drill Team captured the overall title at the 2009 Mustang Drill Competition held March 7 at Monticello High School in Charlottesville. Glass took first place in the Armed Regulation Flight, Unarmed Regulation Flight and Inspection categories, second place for Armed Regulation Element and third for the Armed Exhibition routine. The team also received points in the Color Guard and Unarmed Exhibition performances.
- The following William M. Bass Elementary School students were named ‘Terrific Kids’ by the Lynchburg Kiwanis Club: Jamiyah Henry, Dylan Bryant, JaHaira Smith, Jamon Hubbard, Lauryn Robertson, Serena Henderson, Kevin Napier, Zoe Jones, Armonie Walker, Bryanna Perkins, Alyssa Hicks, Zhanae Payne, Jeremy Haskins, Gregory Athill, Cory Herndon and Ricky Little.
- Five Lynchburg City schools participated in the District 6 Band and Orchestra Festival held March 5 and 7 at E.C. Glass High School. The following schools received ‘Superior’ ratings in both performance and sight reading: E.C. Glass and Heritage high schools and Dunbar Middle School. Linkhorne Middle School received a ‘Superior’ rating in sight reading and an ‘Excellent’ rating in performance. Sandusky Middle School received an ‘Excellent’ rating in both performance and sight reading.
- The following Heritage High School students took first place honors in the State DECA Marketing Competition and will be eligible to compete at the International Career Development Conference to be held in April in Anaheim, Calif.: Bobby Jones, first in Sports and Entertainment Marketing, and Keina Schweikart and Jessica Murphy, first in Buying and Merchandising Management Event.
Private Schools
- The following Holy Cross Regional Catholic School band students were rated ‘Superior’ or ‘Excellent’ during the American Independent Music Association Solo Festival: Glenn Trent, trumpet, ‘Excellent’ rating; and Lainey Cassidy, Hannah Christian, Koda Mutchler and Christopher Elliott (Keyboard), Avery Combs and James Schubert (trumpet), Mary Key and Sydney Walker (flute) and Michael Charlton and Gabriel Siegenthaler (alto saxophone), ‘Superior’ ratings.
SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
Amherst County
- Elon Ruritan Club is granting two college scholarships to area seniors. Applications are due March 27 and may be obtained from the guidance counselors office at Amherst County High School or by calling Henry Allen at 384-1670. Public, private and homeschooled students are encouraged to apply and will be judged based on grades, extracurricular activities, volunteer efforts and character references.
Elon Elementary School

Parents must bring state-issued, certified copy of birth certificate, proof of residency in Appomattox County and child’s social security card.
