-  The Appomattox County High School Sr. FFA horse judging team earned third-place overall at a clinic held Sept. 5 at the Airfield 4-H Center in Wakefield. Team members included Julie James, Nile Wallace, Mallory Baldwin and advisor Alison Harrington.

Bedford

-  The following Jefferson Forest High School student musicians were selected for the Senior Regional Orchestra: Dylan Barber, second on percussion, and Jessica Snead, first on bass clarinet. Both students also qualified for the All-Virginia Band and Orchestra Auditions to be held in February 2010.

Lynchburg

-  The following Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School for Innovation students had their essays chosen for submission to the Virginia Middle School Association’s essay contest, ‘An Era of Change’: Autumn Tayman and Dylan Worsham, sixth grade, Galen Shen and Jonathan Williams, seventh grade, and Hope Wright and David Gilmer, eighth grade. These essays will be judged at the regional level for the chance to compete this month at the state level.

-  Twenty-nine Heritage High School students recently earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams. The following students qualified for the AP National Scholar Award by earning an average grade of at least 4.0 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 4.0 or higher on eight or more of these exams: Benjamin Karaus and Adeel Ilyas.The following students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3.0 or higher on five or more of these exams: Nicholas Castanes, James Gaston, Jake Haskins, Cyrus Hinkson, Adeel Ilyas, Katie Jaberg, Benjamin Karaus, Joshua Knight, Monica Li, Sarah Nilles and Kyle Tenny.The following students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3.0 or higher on four or more of these exams: Anne Ancheril and Sarah Lavinder. Fray Educational Center

- The Fray Educational Center, located next to Rustburg High School, is holding its eighth annual Craft Festival from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 31. The event features craft vendors, food, games for children, music and a silent auction. For more information or to sign up as a vendor, call F.E.C. at 434-332-1180. Proceeds benefit F.E.C.

Lynchburg

- Heritage and E.C. Glass high schools are working with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Network to sponsor a two-week food drive ending Oct. 16 during halftime of the Heritage-Glass varsity football game at City Stadium. The schools are encouraging extracurricular groups and athletic teams to donate.The food bank is soliciting donations of full-size frozen turkeys or the cash equivalent of a frozen turkey, which is $15.

Perrymont Elementary School

Sandusky Middle School

E.C. Glass High School

- Oct. 6: The Grim Reaper walks the halls as part of the YOVASO Club’s ‘Save Your Tailgate, Buckle-Up’ campaign

- Oct. 7: Mock Crash, part of the YOVASO Club’s ‘Save Your Tailgate, Buckle-Up’ campaign, 8:55 to 9:25 a.m.

- Oct. 10: Mercy Care Council’s African dinner, silent auction and African craft sale to raise money for the Mercy Care Center in Nairobi, Kenya, 6 p.m. in the E.C. Glass Cafeteria.  The event also includes a performance of African dance by Virginia School of the Arts. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased from Mrs. Worsham in G101 or Mrs. Nuckles in the Main Office. Silent auction donations and corporate/individual sponsors are also needed.

- Tickets are now on sale for E.C. Glass Theatre’s 30th anniversary season. Performances include ‘Forbidden Broadway,’ ‘Flowers for Algernon,’ ‘Steel Magnolias,’ ‘I Hate Hamlet,’ ‘ The Music Man,’ and ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.’  Season tickets are $50. Heritage High School
