ACHIEVEMENTS
Appomattox
-The following Appomattox Elementary School students were recently named All-Star Readers: Aaliyah Daniel, Tristan Campbell, Markevious Berkley, Erin Thompson, Jesse Jennings, Kelsie Meredith-Hill, Kijana Robinson and Kaitlin McDaniel.
-Appomattox Elementary School student Hannah Royal earned more than 500 Accelerated Reader points, and fellow student Mason Farley earned more than 400 points.
Bedford
-Liberty High School teacher Mark Day was recently named Liberty’s ‘Teacher of the Year’ for the 2007-2008 school year. Day teaches U.S. and AP European History and serves as the department chair. He has taught social studies at LHS for 13 years and is an avid participant in historical re-enactments.
-Liberty High School student Elizabeth Goff will receive her State Future Farmers Association Degree at the 81st State FFA Convention to be held June 16-19 at Virginia Tech. Goff is eligible to run for the state offices of secretary or treasurer during the convention.

-The following Liberty High School students were named finalists in the Anne Spencer Poetry Contest: Maggie Esposito, Olivia Graff and Stephanie Overstreet. These students read their winning poems during a ceremony held June 2 at the Anne Spencer Garden.
-Liberty High School student Virginia Phillippe took first place in the medicine and health division at the Virginia Junior Academy of Science held May 21 at Hampton Univerity. Phillippe’s project was entitled, ‘The Effect of Extended Ultrasonic Exposure on the Lifecycle of Brine Shrimp.’ Phillippe is also at student at the Central Virginia Governor’s School.
-The following Liberty High School students were Southside Area Future Farmers of America Proficiency Award winners: Camden Harrison, Vegetable Production, Austin Beaty, Specialty Animal Production (placement); Elizabeth Goff, Small Animal Care (placement); Jacob Danby, Agricultural Processing (placement); Derrick Anderson, Dairy Production (placement); Cody Goff, Forest Management (placement). The Southside Area encompasses 17 counties and awards are based on their Supervised Agricultural Experience Program conducted at home or on their job placement.

-Jessica Jefferson, a 2008 graduate of Jefferson Forest High School, was selected by the University of Mary Washington for ‘Honors Admission’ for the fall of 2008. Jefferson is a member of the National Honor Society, was captain of the forensics team and a member of the JFHS Advance Symphonic and Marching bands. She is also a Girls State delegate, an emergency medical technician with the Boonsboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, and a member of the Peakland United Methodist Church mission team. Jefferson is the daughter of Dr. Terry and Julianna Jefferson of Forest.
Campbell
-The Brookville Middle School students received Stinger Awards for the month of April: Landon Curry, sixth grade, Andrew Alvaranga, seventh grade, and Jordan Curry, eighth grade.

-E.C. Glass High School senior Joseph Koes recently received a Jefferson Scholarship from the University of Virginia. This scholarship, given annually to only 35 students, gives Koes a ‘full ride’ to UVa, including spending money. Koes is a catcher for the E.C. Glass baseball team, plays eight musical instruments and is a ski instructor at Wintergreen Resort. He is currently pursuing his Eagle Scout award and is a volunteer at the local emergency room. Koes plans to become a doctor.
wChristopher Hackman, a rising senior at E.C. Glass High School, is one of 14 recipients of the Finland-U.S. Senate Youth Exchange Scholarship administered through Youth for Understanding USA. Hackman will depart June 25 for an eight-week trip to Finland where he will live with a host family and attend academic classes with Finnish teenagers.

-James River Day School fourth-grade students Zachry Martin and Quinn Anderson were honored recently for their outstanding Accelerated Reader accomplishments. Martin earned 709.6 points, and Anderson earned 745.7 points.

Lynchburg
- Lynchburg City Schools will offer Summer String Lessons (viola, cello and bass) for rising sixth- through ninth-grade LCS students. No previous experience is necessary. Fifty-minute group lessons will be held June 23, 26 and 30, and July 3, 14, 17, 21 and 24. Lessons are $50 (for the session) and will be held in the Dunbar Middle School Orchestra Room.
