Student of the week: Joseph Bunyard

Liberty Christian Academy student Joseph Bunyard has translated his love of writing and current events into Bulldog Bytes, the lower school’s newspaper.
What originally started as Joseph’s passion to report the news of the day at LCA turned into a big hit and this year became part of the fifth grade curriculum. Now during exploratory period fifth-graders use the computer lab to create the paper.
“I don’t know where I got the idea, but I always like to write,” Joseph said. “It’s been neat to see it grow.”
Joseph, who is now in fifth grade, started the paper as a third grader. He said he’s always had an interested in what’s going on in the world.
“I think news is important,” Joseph said, “because it really shows you what’s going on in the world.”
Joseph’s mom, Melinda Bunyard, teaches at LCA and helps students to put out the paper. She said Joseph is always helping when the classes come to the computer lab.
“He’s so good with editing and publishing,” she said.
Bunyard said both her and her husband have been supportive of Joseph’s news gathering. They watch the news every night as a family.
“He has been writing stories since he could write he loves to know the news,” Bunyard sad. “We encourage him to do because we think it’s cool.”
His initial paper chronicled things going on inside his classroom and on the playground. He even wrote, “the curly fry report” about the food served in the cafeteria.
When he’s not busy working on the school paper, Joseph enjoys sports and said his favorite subjects in school are government and history. He has also created his own news show, The Joe Show, with a video camera he got for Christmas.
