Amherst County official charged with inappropriate contact with a child resigns
An Amherst County employee charged with inappropriate contact with a child has resigned as the director of economic development.
Leon Parrish, Amherst County Board of Supervisors chairman, said he was notified Wednesday of the resignation of John Mulvey, who has served as the economic development director since late 2008.
Mulvey was arrested June 18 after turning himself in to Amherst authorities. He is charged with attempted aggravated sexual battery against a child under age 13, a felony, Amherst police said.
He was later released on a $10,000 bond and ordered not to leave the commonwealth.
Supervisors met last week and talked about Mulvey’s job status in a closed session. They did not demand his resignation, Parrish said.
“We were waiting for the outcome of the trial,” he said.
Mulvey was hired in 2008 after Joe Mullen, the former economic development director, retired. His annual salary was approximately $60,000. He held a similar post in Washington County in eastern North Carolina.

I’m Peachy Mr. Vahomboy, how about you? The C-ment pond is 86 degrees, it’s ANOTHER beautiful day and life is good.
My only problem is all the tourists. Since the “Supervisors” gave that politicians kid the “job” of being Tourist Director (the office only costs $80+ thousand a year) you can’t MOVE in this County. They are coming from the four corners of the globe. A family of Lithuanians just parachuted into my back yard. All the busses are full you see.
I mean, can you think of a place that has more tourist attractions than Amherst County. (or more relatives on the payroll?)
Good morning AP. How are ya?
Gotta agree here. Time to clean house in Amherst County. Been needing it for a long time.
The ONLY thing these characters have EVER been concerned with is secrecy.
Huge sums of money are spent on studies and projects that the PEOPLE of Amherst County have no say, or even knowledge of. They are crooked as a bag of snakes and the ONLY way they can operate is behind closed doors.
We are talking about $72,000,000 in the hands of characters who can’t even get their story straight ONCE!
I think we all Agree that Leon Parrish, Chris Adams, Don Kidd, Vernon Wood and Ray Vandall should step down. If they don’t and if the try to be re-elected, we will lobby against them and show the people of Amherst who the really are.
WE DO NOT WANT THEM SERVING US ANY MORE !!! Criminal belong in JAIL !!!
The Board of Supervisors should resign with him. They are guilty of molesting the laws of The Commonwealth of Virginia.
