A wreck in Campbell County, just south of Lynchburg, sent three people to the hospital after the SUV they were riding in overturned.

Trooper J.L. Doss of the Virginia State Police said Doris E. Dalton, 48, of Campbell County, was driving her Ford Explorer west on Eastbrook Road, toward U.S. 501, at about 3:40 p.m. Thursday, when she said she ran slightly off the right side of the road.

Dalton told authorities that Michael Roberts, 20, a passenger in the back of the vehicle, reached to grab the steering wheel, trying to straighten the vehicle out, Doss said.

The Explorer then ran off the left side of the road and overturned, said Doss, trapping Dalton between her seat and the steering wheel.

Along with State Police, the Concord Volunteer Fire Department and Rustburg Fire & Rescue responded to the scene, and had Dalton removed from the vehicle within about 15 minutes, said Doss.

Dalton, Roberts and Debra Lunsford, 37, another passenger, all were transported to Lynchburg General Hospital with injuries that Doss said did not appear life threatening.

A 10-year-old girl also was in the vehicle, but Doss said she did not sustain any injuries.

None of the occupants were wearing seatbelts, he said, and Dalton and Roberts were both charged with reckless driving.
