The Rev. Jonathan Falwell will deliver the opening prayer today for the U.S. House of Representatives, an opportunity that he called “an incredible honor.”

Falwell, pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church, said Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-6th District, invited him to fill the guest chaplain role. The invitation was issued through the House of Representatives chaplain’s office.

Goodlatte will deliver a short speech welcoming Falwell to the House.

The events can be viewed on C-SPAN starting about 9:55 a.m.

His day in Washington will include visits with Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th District, and several other members of Congress, Falwell said.

Falwell said he expected to pray for wise leadership and protection for the country.

“Certainly, in that place, wisdom is something to be prayed for on a daily basis,” Falwell said.

“The Bible tells us to pray for our leaders,” Falwell said. “And I’ll pray for protection for our country, thanking God for what he has already done to bless our country in so many ways.

“And also for those who protect us overseas, our men and women overseas,” he said.

A get-together with Liberty University students and graduates who are working on Capitol Hill also was being arranged, Falwell said.

“A lot of them are working as interns and summer staffers,” he said.

Falwell said this would be his first time delivering the opening prayer in Washington.

Falwell said he didn’t know whether his father, the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, ever delivered the opening prayer for the House of Representatives. “Certainly it is an honor he would have deserved,” Falwell said.

“It is an incredible honor for me, and a privilege to be able to do it,” he said.

At least Falwell lives in his own home instead of writing from his Moms’ basement and waiting on his welfare check.  Isn’t tomorrow the big day?

Followup story; Local and vocal supporter of carnival head offers testimony in support of Falwell’s ability to separate stupid people from what little money they had. Castigates congress for being inept swindlers and hopes they listen to the master’s son.

RE: bigjimm(alias nutcase)
You are the one that is showing your ignorance. Congress & your president is doing enough to separate all Americans from their money by themselves. Maybe Jonathan can touch some of the hearts of the congressmen. As bad as things are now you should be happy he is up there praying for help.

Story should read; Lynchburg carnie, attempting to help financial crisis, instructs congress on how to separate poor, stupid people from their money and have them like it. He’s honored that he can demonstrate the family business to our nation’s leaders.

This is a great honor for Lynchburg, to have a local pastor invited to pray over the work of the heathen’s we elected.

there are detailed instructions about prayer in that holy book but going over those again and again does not generate the same profit as hashing over certain other less obvious ones

YOU ARE JUST JEALOUS. JONATHAN FALWELL IS A GREAT PERSON & HAS DONE THIS COMMUNITY WELL. HE WILL REPRESENT THIS AREA LIKE HE SHOULD. AGREED CONGRESS COULD USE A LOT OF PRAYER TO HELP THEM ALONG THE WAY!!!!

Hope he wears hip-waders and a gas mask. And takes an extra-large offering plate and 535 copies of the Bible to pass out. And hoses down in the Reflecting Pool when he’s done.
