Fire destroys Madison Heights business

A fire destroyed Bernie’s Furniture and Cabinetry in Madison Heights early Sunday.

Officials received a call about the fire around 12:16 a.m. Sunday. Although crews were on the scene minutes later, the building went up in flames.

Gary Roakes, Amherst County’s public safety director and fire marshal, is investigating the circumstances of the fire but said he doesn’t believe it is suspicious.

No one was hurt, but the business owner did not have insurance. Roakes estimated the damages at $50,000 for equipment, $5,000 for lumber, and the building was a total loss.
