A fleet of boats will fish for toys to go to needy children this holiday season during a weekend parade at Smith Mountain Lake.

The 11th Annual Flotilla for Toys Boat Parade will take place Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.  The parade of boats decorated in Christmas lights will depart the Virginia Dare Marina at 7 and arrive at the Hales Ford Bridge around 8.

The flotilla will pass Smith Mountain Lake State Park before returning to port. Spectators and participants are asked to donate a new, unwrapped toy.

Last year the event collected 1,500 new toys distributed by Lake Christian Ministries.

In addition to the parade, places near the lake to donate toys include the Smith Mountain Lake Visitor’s Center, Mariner’s Landing, Moneta Farm and Home Center, SML State Park, Fallon’s Restaurant, The General Store, Westlake CVS, SML Mercantile, Westlake BB&T, Dollar General, Good Looks Hair Salon, Blackwater Café, UPS Store, StellarOne Bank, Freckles Ice Cream, Chopsticks, Capps, Hot Shots, Radio Shack, Joe’s Pizza, The Verdana and Mayberry Drive-In and Diner.

To participate in the flotilla or to get more information, call the Virginia Dare Marina at (540) 297-7100.
